Being made redundant :(

Hi all,
Everyone at my work place was called to a meeting this morning, we were told that due to the economic climate our company is being merged with our sister company, and therefore our office will close.
Field based staff will retain their jobs, but office based are facing redundancy. During a meeting with our HR consultant and my boss where I was told that a similar job to mine will be available at our new premises but as it's over 3 hours away it's not feasible for me to work there, or to relocate for various personal reasons.
The gist of it is that I'm facing losing my job, when I asked when the redundancy would take effect I was told it would be from November 12th, following the 2nd consultation meeting - doesn't seem a long time period from now....
I meant to ask in the meeting, would I have any notice from then? my OH has been reading up and is convinced I should be given 5 weeks notice from the point of being given my official redundancy notice as I have worked there for 5 years.... I'm very confused.
Can anyone offer any advise before I speak with the team again next week?

Yes you are due either 5 weeks' notice (or more if your contract states so) as long as you have completed 5 years' service when they do give notice or payment in lieu. If you were not required to work all of that notice, you would still be due to receive payment for it.
You would also be entitled to redundancy pay which will depend on your age as well as your length of service. For the Statutory redundancy pay scheme, a week's pay is capped at £430.0 -

quick tips from my redundancy
get a copy of your personnel file
don't use their recommended solicitor to get your [STRIKE]gagging[/STRIKE] sorry Compromise Agreement looked at. get it INDEPENDANTLY looked at by an employment solicitor.
use the redundancy pay calculator to see how much you SHOULD get and see how much better the Compromise Agreement is.
take the gardening leave, you've earned it
Don't forget to sign on for JSA the minute you are no longer employed - go to the JSA website to file your claim ON YOUR FINAL DAY - don't wait for your P45 before you claim.
go to the entitled to website to see what other benefits you can claim
some companies offer you a 'carreer transition package' to get you back into work swallow your pride and USE IT, USE EVERY SINGLE RESOURCE that they offer you. our company used LHH they were pretty good. look at CVs show you how to find jobs.
Don't expect the Job Centre to help you much...
