For some reason whenever I cook in my slow cooker it all tastes the same, any stew or casserole seems to come out with that 'slow cooker' taste. Any one else have that problems?

I know what you mean. If I do a stew in mine it tastes totally different to one done on the job - like a completely different meal.

I gave up on my slow cooker a while back because of this, and partly because I would need two slow cookers these days as cook vegetarian and meat based meals most nights
The opposite of what you know...is also true
  • I add my "spices" only 10 minutes before I serve. Slow cooking them tends to over cook them so they loose any additional taste benefits of adding them.

Yes, which is why I stopped using mine.

Our favourite slow cooker meal is a gammon joint smeared with wholegrain mustard, sitting on chunks of parsnip, onion and carrot, and a (small) bottle of cider poured in. I serve it on the first day hot with the veg, some mash and thicken some of the cooking liquid for a gravy. I always make extra mash so the following day we have the gammon cold and use the leftover mash & veg to make bubble and squeak, all served with fried egg. It's soooo gorgeous! :D

I used to have this with my old slow cooker years ago, it was one of the ones which was a metal pot with a glass lid and a small heated base.

I recently started using a proper slow cooker with the ceramic crock pot and it is really good.

Do any//many of you actually put RAW meat into your slow-cooker? And ... isn't that 'dangerous' as the cooking process never gets the meat up to a temperature where potential harmful stuff would be killed off?

Browning stuff first wouldn't be possible before work ..... so, always wondered when people would find the time to do all that prep work in the mornings.
