Ebico - SSE wanting a deposit

I signed up to Ebico for electric with quarterly billing on receipt of bill. Few days later I get a postcard from SSE saying my application is delayed until I call them.
I called SSE and they say they can't supply me until I pay a £150 deposit paid back after 12 months, or £100 each month by direct debit. I only use on average £100 a quarter on electric to start with.
Is this normal?
I've called Ebico and they just say they will look into it and contact me back.
I pay my current supplier, EDF, by quarterly billing.

Will be a deposit/DD plan based on the result of the credit check. Cheaper to pay the £150 that you get back in 12 months
CC limits £26000
Long term CC debt £0
Total low rate loan debt £3000
Almost debt free feeling, priceless.
Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.0 -
In that case there is little financial point in switching to Ebico. You might as well persevere with your current supplier.Deleted_User wrote: »I only use on average £100 a quarter on electric to start with.0 -
Do SSE think you have key meters installed? Sounds typical of what happens when meters are switched from key to credit.
If not, I'd stay with your current supplier or find another.0 -
I have a credit meter not a key meter, always been credit.
Think I'll just stay put. Life is too short for faffing around.0
