Should I get a credit card to improve my credit rating?

My credit rating is fine but it could be better. The only things counting against me is a loan (which I am paying back and am on track to pay back early:D) and the fact that I'm not on the electoral roll (not a UK or EU citizen so unless I change my nationality there's nothing I can do about that one:().

But I'm hoping to get a mortgage with my fianc!e in the next few years so I want my credit rating to be as good as possible. I have never had a credit card as I don't like the idea of spending money that isn't mine, but should I get a credit card to improve my credit rating?

I would only use it for things like grocery shopping where we have a strict budget, or for buying the occasional plane or train ticket online. So if I pay it back in full at the end of every month, would a credit card help my credit rating and would you recommend it? What are people's experiences with this?

Thanks!
