Insurance for second car £1500?! is this normal?

Hello everyone

Just wondering if anyone can explain this to me.

We have just bought a second car and I bought the insurance for it yesterday. The lowest quote we got (and which I had to pay because we needed the insurance today) was £1500 and that was 3rd party fire and theft with no extras (legal protection, courtesy car etc).

There are two of us on the policy. We had no no claims years to use because only my partner has them and they are being used on the other car. I don't have any to use because I was just the named driver on the other car so didn't build any up. So for a new policy for both us is that was the price. My partner had an accident last year and was claimed against. He also had a speeding ticket about four years ago.

Is this just the way it is? Will it get cheaper? Is there a way to make it cheaper?

The car itself was £4000 so we've paid almost half its value in insurance. Arrrggh!

Thank you

Have you called the existing insurer for the other car and asked them about a multicar policy or mirroring your no claims?

Also, sometimes fully comp is cheaper than TPFT. I'd certainly start by callign the existing insurer if you haven't though.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
  • What kind of car out of interest?

Did you check insurance quotes before buying said car? (I assume not).

One year's ncd will make a big difference at renewal.

Whether it's a first or second car isn't really relevant (although as mentioned you can get multi-car policies which may work out cheaper).

What matters is the make/model/year and its insurance group - always worth doing quotes before buying. :(
  • Also check comprehensive cover, TPFT is often more expensive due to the type of people that buy it.

The first years NCD is worth about 30% discount, followed by 3-4 years of 10%. The recent claim has probably loaded your premium aswell.
  • I paid £1800 on my old £600 Fiesta for just me - are you really complaining at £1500 for both of you, WITH a fault claim and points?!

Welcome to the real world, insurance is expensive.
  • Recently insured my old Volvo again. I had transferred my full NCD to a new car I recently purchased. So was starting again with the Volvo on a new policy.

I was delighted to see that my Volvo with no NCB was cheaper than last years premium where I had full NCD.

Not necessarily, it depends on so many factors. I pay less than £400 for a two ton Yank tank with modifications. My second car costs me less than £200.

I have been offered an introductory discount equivalent to full no claims before, when insuring second or third cars. I think it pays to speak to brokers direct than use online comparison sites.
