Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD

My daughter wants a hand held device of some sort - 17 years old. She is buying.

She will get a laptop next year when she goes to uni. She already has an Android phone.

Se initially pitched at a Kindle Fire HD and then asked me to have a look.

I had never really bothered with them as I saw them as a bit of a toy if I am honest.

Main use would be browsing, you tube, music, film, ereader probably.

I have a Kindle touch so am are of the eink benefits but guess these don't transfer to the Fire display.

Looking at the various threads here and stuff on the web I am coming down in favour of the Nexus.

The fact it is open Android with Jelly bean so much more flexible on use and apps etc. rather than bundled and tied to Amazon. The processor seems better but I am not sure whether that makes a vast difference at this level.

The Fire seems to have some positives but I am not sure whether they are more cosmetic.

Video content on demand
Dolby/ up rated speakers
Better contrast
Micro HDMI for TV connection

I have seen that you can get an OTG cable for the Nexus does this open up USB connectivity/data transfer/storage easily?

Any thoughts?

I'd go with the Nexus 7 for most of the reasons you've mentioned, when the first Kindle Fire came out in the US there was no Nexus 7 so it was a very cheap tablet with decent specs. However the market is a bit different now with the Nexus 7 on the market which also offers decent specification and given she already has an Android phone it would be more straightforward being able to run the same applications on both.

The Kindle will be no use as a e-book reader unless she wants to be locked into Amazon's proprietary system.
Every other e-book vendor uses e-Pub.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • The Nexus 7 is about to be upgraded to have 3G.
You will therefore be able to buy the tablet with 32GB+Wifi+3G for £239.

Check out the Google play website - They will let you know when it is going to be released if you register your email address.

I think it will be worth the wait - You will be able to browse anywhere - Without the reliance of Wifi.

    A fairly unanimous verdict.

We went for the 32GB version in the end without 3G, after deliberation, dd is happy with wifi hotspot pickups, through using her phone, so wasn't too fussed.

Will let you know how we get on.
