    mcculloch29,
I haven't had many funerals/crem services to attend and I guess mainly being alone(ish)that is one pain I will be relieved fromin coming years...I hope it went as well as it could for your son this morning and that your's later in the week is as good as such an event can be...I suspect from what you said had been posted on Facebook by a relative those attending have the right attitude. But of course it will be sad.

Thank you to those who posted the links earlier regarding the list and the article on the food poverty, frightening and sad but good to see word is getting out there. Even though in general the media seems to ignore such stories.

Does anyone know why my honey has separated? It's crystallised at the bottom and is runny at the top. Can I save it? I've had it sat upside down for the past hour but its not budging the solidified part.

fuddle, if you scrape it all into a small pan and reheat it GENTLY, the crystals will slowly dissolve/decrystallise or whatever the correct term is. You can do it in the microwave, but it's more controllable on the cooker top.
Dunno why it does it though, lots of reasons! :D

Fuddle I have a medium size garden but can't cultivate it because the previous house owner used it to park his caravans (two) on and he put down years worth of scraggy hardcore which is now about a foot deep and would take a pickaxe to get through.

I also don't like to grow food directly in the soil here as there are a lot of cats passing through and they do leave their calling cards around - I'd never be very happy that the soil is safe to pull veggies from.

Pretty much all veggies can be grown in pots if they're deep enough. My local £shop/hardware store place sells huge plastic pots for a few quid each, they're a real bargain.

You can also use the flat growbags and purpose made potato bags - I pick these up cheap when I see them in £shops.

Use tall deep pots with fine compost for root vegetables and potatoes, and growbags for tomatoes and peppers. I haven't yet tried growing brassicas (broccoli, cauli etc.) in pots or bags but I might have a go this year.

Don't stress much over the type of compost or pay a fortune for it, as you can feed your crops anyway - but as I mentioned before, I'd avoid the very light peat stuff as this does tend to dry out too quickly and the pots can blow over. It's less of a problem with larger pots though - I grew potatoes in some leftover light peat compost last year, and they were ace.

Use fresh compost each year - It's really not worth the disease risk to use old stuff again unless you have a way to sterilise it.

Long story short, growing in pots is the way to go for growing crops in your garden... you can get more in, you have free rein as to where to put things... and they are easier to manage.

If you're putting pots on the grass, use some "feet" so the bottom of the pot is off the ground and you can clip the grass underneath it. There will be a little patch underneath where the grass hasn't grown, but it recovers within a season so no long term worries.

Sorry I hijacked the thread - I prattled on more than I should have :o

Try standing the jar in hot water for a while then stirring or put in the microwave for a few seconds at a time and then stir until crystals have dissolved, be careful though at it can get quite hot.
