Pops did you tell them when they visited that there were bags of things stored in the garage? It might explain a further visit if that has been documented on the report they wrote?

I should think that as long as everything has a place and not stored on the floor then it doesn't matter what you have in your home. Non of this has been about throwing out your possessions so please don't go even further down the route and missing the point - the original health and safety issue that you have rectified.

Let them have a look in the garage. I find it difficult to imagine what problem they would have with it being used as a store room if its just a few bags/lawn mower etc etc

On our way back home. We were supposed to be back yesterday but stayed a bit longer. We have thoroughly enjoyed it. Had nice weather and went further north to chance the sun on days it was overcast.

I'm so inspired to get back to hardcore OS homemaking. And decided that in my life that is what I want to do. I want to stay at home, working it, grow/make my own and look after my family when they come in from work. Of course this is the time where I need to make an income and the decision has well and truelly been made to go into the childminding. Course starts next week and a solution to my needs to be a housewife and mum too.

Really looking forward to getting home and sorting my store cupboard out. DH is on board more than ever. I hope I have some pea shoots popping through when I get back :)

Struggling with what to sow next as its June -worried I've missed the boat this year.
  • Go that FUDDLE, great choice, great Mum, great life!!!! More strength to your arm little one, go for it and enjoy life again. It's such a funny growing season thisyear I'd have a go at anything in the garden, if you want veg get some ready germinated young plants from a garden centre and give yourself a head start. I found 2 tins of MaMade orange concentrate in the store and have made 12lbs of marmalade today which is cooling down in the kitchen, off to walk my boy and go admire the oak trees which were trimmed in the lane, they have made such a good job of them, it looks fab, Cheers Lyn xxx.

    Thank you Fuddle,
That's exactly what it is a place for a lawn mower(but that is likely to be got rid of)as I need a new one and for now I still have someone who does the garden for me...there a few bags(black sacks)but I was going to go through them anyhow. But its not as if anyone lives in the garage:p

I don't really have much in the way of personal possessions any more. A few books, CD's(but I now download/record my own in MP3 form)that saves space and clothes. But I now have enough to last me the rest of my life I suspect. So as I get rid of things, nothing is coming in to replace what is being thrown out.

If I died tomorrow my home would be cleared very quickly.

And as stated you could get into the garage if you need to.

Glad that you enjoyed your time away and it recharged the batteries. And you return ready to do battle again...and feel positive.

Was talking to the RV yesterday about vans Mrs C. Remembering the fruit & veg van that was painted dark green and smelled of earth and tatties, and the grocer with racks of tins, and the bakers van with buns cakes and bread, and the butchers van who also had fish.
Where I lived we had no shops until I was about 10 and everybody queued up at the vans. Also nobody's mum worked then - we were all in and out of each other's houses all the time and often got chased by mums :)
Most of the mums went to the tattie picking in a bus, I can remember the old clothes and the headsquares. I think that was good money because everybody seemed to go.

We still have a old Morris Minor van yea thats right, its painted a lovely warm green and as cream hubcaps., it belongs to a tea shop at a small town sea side , you cant help but look at it........Its got a sign on the side saying we serve cream teas etc, so nostalgic......

I remember my mum wearing headscarves and going tatty and bean picking, that was the only work around that would fit in with our school hours..........

POPS................ I expect the council want to make sure that you dont put the garage clutter back into the house .........

I dont think id be inclined to ask them to give you more time to clean it up, that may had fuel to their fire ,if you know what I mean......And if its only one garage surely that wouldnt take a week to do.?....Order a skip normally there within couple of hours , its no good 2 bags a week out to the bin man , cos if the garage is full it will take forever and they want it clear .........

Get a handy man in or school boy and pay to get it done ASAP.........Right now in their eyes they have every reason to keep on at you until its up to their standard ...............If you dont get it done in their time scale , they probaly will say the house , garage , and garden is too much for you.......

I wouldnt say they are harassing you (as yet) because its isnt up to their standards, but once it is you only then get a visit probaly once a year.......I never had a visit in 18 years that I was in a council house, just had one inspection the week before I left.......

They are not saying to you."we dont want any ornaments etc ", but they wont have the place cluttered up , theyve made that clear ........

Thats my opinion at what is going on with them , you must remember though its their house and you have to abide by their rules.........Sheila
  • POPS when they visit next just keep smiling, it will worry them like hell, a small revenge for the unease and worry they have caused you!!! Cheers Lyn xxx.

I was talking to my father in law Lyn and he said that where your mind wanders off to when its rested is where you want to be. Not once has my mind wandered into a classroom or a hospital ward... It wanders to rustic items, aprons and serenity so I guess that is my calling, a home bird like me gran.

I've seen some ruined crofts over this week and want to emulate that kind of living in a way. I want to 'work' at home not just be at home. Whether that is minding children, baking bread or tending to my little veg pots, well it's a start. May well look into homemade gift dog treats as a business too. Just an idea. :)

Possibly thought Fuddle, they are ruined because they were too hard to cope with. Maybe their owners upped sticks and movd to a tenement in Glasgow and lived happily ever after :) We all different, so just do what feels right to you.

You only have to listen to you Mar to get a glimpse at just how hard it is up there. Crofting must have been so stressful, literally relying on the elements for food in the most toughest of places. It is inspiring stuff but Ill never be able to give up supermarkets or my washing machine but homemaking is my calling, even a high tech, inner town and influenced/reliant on government one.

About 20 mins from home and after I've sorted the washing piles I'm making a ginger steamed pud for tea.

Happy birthday pops! And elderflower talk? Is that really a year gone by? I've a whole new area to learn about foraging in this year ;)
  • Home birds of this world make the world a better place little one, I can't think of anything more satisfying than keeping a good home and bringing up grounded and loved kiddlers. Looking after mine and home is my career, just because that has lately gone out of fashion a little doesn't mean it's not still valid. It takes lots of skills to make and mend, cook and preserve, grow and maintain all things and not all of us are cut out to be high flying (or even very low flying in my case) career girls. I think if home is where your heart is, then working from home in whatever capacity you choose will make you happy and fulfilled, and that would be a VERY good place to be, yes?

Oh god, ginger pud, what time will it be ready?????

Did anyone see the programme last night about last night about living in Elizabethan England?

They showed a lovely thatched cottage in a leafy glade - idyllic - until you heard what the living conditions inside were like!

Being self-sufficient is a great idea, I just sometimes thing it's one of those things that in reality is very hard. Some of the old ways were not such fun - wash day must have been hellish, all that rubbing and mangling!
