PC problems..

Hello, my mum's PC runs on Windows ME and has Norton security. She left the PC on the other day while she went out (yes I've given her the environmental lecture ;) ). When she returned the screen had turned from it's normal blue to grey, like when it starts in safe mode. The screen resolution seems to have changed, the icons are all bigger & she is unable to find the mouse pointer on the screen.

I'm no techie, but I tried to have a look at it for her and got nowhere. I can use the keyboard to bring up programs (norton, diagnostics etc) but can't move though the folders to run a scan.

My old laptop pc used to change the screen resolution if I hibernated too much but there seems to be too many other things wrong for it to be that.

She hasn't been able to run the Norton live update for a while and when I was on it something was trying to connect to the internet which the norton deemed high risk but I stupidly didn't write the details down.

I was wondering if it could be a virus/worm? Any advice would be appreciated

format it and install a decent OS such as win2k on it.
