I'm looking at renting my house out and was just asking to see if I could rent it out for less than six months am I legal to rent it out on a shorter term? Callum

You can rent it out out for a week but if you want to rent it out as a Fixed Term Tenancy, the earliest that you can start court proceedings to evict tenants who do not leave is 6 months after the start of the tenancy. And it could be several months before you got possession.

I believe you can rent it out for as short a time as you want to. Whether the costs of finding a tenant make it worthwhile I don't know.

The reason why I need a minium tenancy agreement is that I have been asked to work away and don't now when the works will end so is there a agreement that I can just give there two months notice in when I need my property back. I don't fancy signing a six months let when I only work away for three months.0

No.
As said, you can give a fixed term of any length (a wek, a month, 3 months) and the tenant can then leave, without notice, when that fixed term ends.
However, if they do NOT leave, you cannot start eviction proceedings in court for 6 months, under statute. So you would have no guaranteed way of moving back in within the first, say, 8 months.0 -

Nope, AST would be fine... but you do understand you can't start S21 process until 6 months after tenancy starts?? & no, even if the words on paper say it ain't an AST it will be an AST...
Re using a "holiday let" - again, if it isn't a (real) holiday - (for the tenant)- it will still be an AST...

Where the LL wants to obtain repossession of the property proper notice has to be given to the T and a court order obtained, unless the T agrees to leave, (T cannot be asked to leave within the Fixed Term unless specific breaches have occurred)I understand what your saying but do landlords really use the courts to evict tenants?0 -

Thanks for that advice I have a assured tenancy form now so on the section term would I just put one month? Would the tenancy then go in to a periodic Tenancy after the 1st month?0 -
On a related issue OP - have you sought (and obtained) your Lender's Consent to Let, assuming that you have bought the property on a residential mortgage? Thought about LL insurance?
Have you done any research at all into property letting? If you have then you'll know about gas safety certs, fire retardant furnishings, tenancy deposit schemes, declaring your rental income to HMRC and so on.0
