Credit limit increases - manual vs automatic

Hi all,

Bizarre situation with Barclaycard recently - last month I was offered a 6.9% lob transfer on my Barclaycard platinum. With only a small available balance it wasn't worth taking up the offer.

I decided to request a credit limit increase from £2800 to £3500 to take advantage of the offer, but was refused.

This month I receive my statement, along with a notice that they are going to increase my credit limit to £4800! (Higher than the amount I requested last month). The offer has now expired though.

I'm totally confused as to how or why this would happen - particularly why they would refuse me a smaller increase and then automatically award a higher increase!

Can anyone shed any light? It leaves me baffled.

Thanks muchly!

  • What might be a good idea, if you still have it is to look at the paper work for the transfer. I may state that you need a certain amouth availible to transfer hense why it was increased so much. I hate it when you get 'unknown' increases as I like to keep within a set budget... ...im not sure but I thought that a consumer group tried to get this stopped a while ago?

Thanks - I didn't do the transfer as I would have only been able to move approx £200 to the card (due to me having a small available balance as I was close to my £2800 limit). It didn't seem worth it for that amount, so I requested a credit limit increase to £3500 in order to do the transfer, but I was refused.

I was left really confused this month when there was a sentence on my card statement that said they were increasing my credit limit to £4800 (£1300 more than I'd requested and been refused for!)

    Bizarre. :-S lol

Funny you say that, must be a Barclaycard thing, a couple of years ago I requested an increase, which was refused, which a week later turned into a much larger auto increase! I was doing the 6.9% LOB transfer too.

smcdougal- the auto increases weren't stopped per se, they just have to give you 30 days notice now, rather than the increase just magically appearing. Gives you a chance to reject it. Some issuers allow you to opt out of receiving increase offers altogether.

badobsession- try calling them, if they've replaced the online offer with a 0% for a limited periods offer, they may still have the 6.9% lob available to you, it's a standard offer for the majority of their card holders.

Its usually so they can entice you into the deal
  • I wonder if the automatic increase was already in train so the system saw your request as in addition to it, even though you didn't know about it and presumably neither did the person you spoke to. It might just be a timing issue.
