Cheap eating near major attractions

Just back from a great trip to London- the Hoxton of course- and ate out on Tesco deal vouchers mostly with a bit of mystery shopping.. Anyway while I was there we ended up at the Tate Britain and almost had to eat in the restaurant there, but balked at the prices; £8 ish for a main meal and £12ish in the restaurant. It seems to be miles from anywhere to eat reasonably and we didn't want to waste our day looking around for ages.We asked a student who was giving out flyers to the Chelsea School of Art where there was to eat nearby. He said we could eat in the Art school cafe which was just over the road. Admittedly it was a bit like a school cafe but really good prices- £1.50 for a big plate of jollif rice for instance. We paid £7 altogether for 2 meals with nice juice drinks. Also it said it was organic produce too, though I'm not sure about that.
I know there are McDonalds near lots of attractions ( but I hate them) so I wondered if anyone else had good tips for reasonable places to eat hiding next to expensive locations on trips out? A packed lunch is cheaper of course but not always possible and I like to have a little sit down somewhere on these trips- must be old...:o
