Rejected insurance claim

It's a shame that's how it is, if the car belongs to a big insurance company, you're fine, if you're just a working class man you'll get nothing.

If these things are not covered by insurance, there needs to be something else to cover it. The warranty is a joke, a car should have a life of more than 3 years and the majority do!

If your posh or working class it doesnt matter if a car blows up its nothing to do with the insurance company.

Car insurance - covers in the event of an accident/liability claims
Break down insurance - covers the cost of recovering the vehicle sometimes can cover minor or easy repair
Manufacturers warrenty - covers in the event of malfunction

Once your manufacturers warrenty is up thats it, I dont know of any insurance compays willing to pay for repair full stop.

My mate used to have a pug 206 spent more time at peugeot getting repairs then he had it on the road, the ECU malfunctioned 5 times, cut the engine out and the steering lock came on on the motorway, he crashed into a lorry.

Now he has a honda civic type R, he rather likes that :rotfl:

peterbaker, that is enormously helpful, thanks so much.

What exactly happened? I honestly dont know for certain. In Paris, the Peugeot dealer took me to the engine and showed me but my French is limited. From what I understand he said "le boite du vitesse" (speedbox?) broke and casser (fell) onto the "moteur" (engine). The piston ejected and caused the engine to fall from the mount and all the oil leaked.

That's what I made of it but I dont know if it was a proper diagnosis or just an observation. After that he gave me the estimation, which was ridiculous.

Once we get the car here, a Peugeot mechanic who my dad's got to know over the years has said he will look at it and keep it at his garage and find out what happened for sure. I'm pretty sure it wasnt due to any external trauma but I guess it is possible.

RAC said they would phone me back yesterday but they never did, I will phone up their customer services on Monday, speak to a senior there and keep pestering with the points you raised.

If that fails, I think I will pursue it with SAGA.

Thanks a lot for that. Im not at home at the moment but when I get back, I will write the details of the parts the Peugeot dealer wrote in his quotation which might give you a better idea of what he's thinking.

These are the details of the quotation in euros if anyone can decipher what might be wrong from this:

    Parts -

    Radiator - 145.21
    Provision BVM(?) - 299.02
    BTE-Pont Mec Es - 2323.37
    Oil - 15.67
    Provision Demar - 89.71
    Demarreur est - 215.28
    Provision Mot - 1233.44
Mot est diesel (diesel engine?) - 3417.31
    Liquide refroidissement (coolant?) - 40.00
    Motor oil - 50.00

    Labour -

    Test after work - 42.50
    Detaching/attaching radiator - 76.50
Detaching/attaching boite du vitesse (speed box?) - 76.50
    Replacing engine - 1513.00
    Detaching/attaching protection on the engine - 8.50
Remontage bad inferiour (refrigeration) - 187.00

    Extras - 100

    Total = 9833E
  • Sounds like he replaced the whole car :rotfl:

On the serious side I think they saw you coming and have ripped you off something rotten. :(

Sorry been away from your thread ... I fear Yant1 is correct.

Boite de vitesse is gearbox I think and that would have to be taken off to replace the engine.

Mot looks to be short for Moteur (Engine)
    Not sure what provision means

Not sure what Provision BVM means but might be a breakdown call out charge with V being Vehicule or maybe every major item or service "bought-in" by the garage that did the repair has a markup of the cost price. Maybe that's what provision is?

Not sure about BTE Pont Mec Es - pont is of course loosely "bridge" which might be the "lift" of the car from the call out to the garage with T being "Transport" or similar (you need an imagination for this bill equivalent to the one used in originally devising it I think:-| ... or maybe it is a short description of the pickup location and destination?

(Make sure they haven't charged both you and Saga for that!)

Yes I think the liquide refroidissement is coolant.

Demarreur is Starter Motor I think, again with it's own Provision item

    Nothing about engine mounts?

The replacement of the Radiator might now be the clue. Where did the original question about possible damage to the engine mount come in?

Did an engine mount break causing the radiator to move and foul something and get pierced, losing significant coolant which then caused the engine to overheat and seize? That's an unusual but bog-standard motor accidental damage claim AFAIK! Will still have to persuade an insurer to take it on however!

And what happened to the starter motor? (if I am right about demarreur!)
Did you kill it perhaps by repeatedly trying to start the seized engine?

Best I can offer from this brief!

My father in law just replaced the engine in a 80,000 mile Renault 19 diesel and he is a very conservative driver.

Replacing the engine is definately the cheapest way out of this predicament.

To go slightly off on a tangent.. what is the law about insuring a vehicle twice?

I want to leave a policy running for the next 2 months even though I have sold the vehicle. I won't drive the old vehicle again, I just don't want to pay the exit fee.

Absolutely no problem mikenco. If you have sold the vehicle to a complete stranger and there is no arrangement for you to use it ever again then you have no insurable interest in it and therefore your insurance is now void until you add a substitute vehicle. I wasn't aware that "exit fees" were charged per se? If you pay monthly, you are obliged to keep paying unless you make a formal cancellation and whatever terms that entails (which could mean you still owe the full twelve months anyway with some insurers).

Of course if your buyer did not insure and the change of ownership hasn't been notified to DVLC then if the police happened to do a cursory insurance check then they'd get thrown off the scent for the next two months, and you might get any speeding camera or parking tickets!

The illegality of dual insurance only ever arises if someone attempts to claim twice for the same agreed damage costs thereby trying to profit.

    Thanks again Peter.

The car's back in London, the mechanic says he'll tell us what's wrong tomorrow.

I'm hoping we can replace the faults cheaply and then sell the car.

The only other thing I was thinking is that if the cambelt went, Peugeot didn't tell us when it should have been changed. In the servicing book, it says that Peugeot would tell us when we get the vehicle when the cambelt should be changed but it doesn't say anywhere.

    Update:

    Car has been checked out.

The connecting rod broke so the engine, gearbox & starter motor all need to be replaced. Looking at ~£2000. :(
