Hotels in Los Angeles... Help!

Can anyone recommend a hotel in Los Angeles, closeish to Downtown for somewhere around (or less than) £100 a night for April next year.

I'm looking on most of the 'usual' review site and I'm just overwhelmed by the shear number and conflicting reviews...

Only going to be there for 3 days on route to NZ, just need somewhere nice and with a pool (for my wife).

Never had this problem before, so if someone (anyone) that's stayed there could suggest something I'd be very grateful...

You could always look at Priceline or Hotwire for cheaper 4* options downtown.

I've only ever stayed in LA with a car so my choices may not be suitable.

Another option is to get a credit card with a good Hotel sign up bonus and use their points to get a hotel.

Priority Club Black Visa and Hilton visa may suit.

Any reason why you want "downtown"? It's very much a commercial and business area and at weekends can be quiet. Hotels there may also be expensive because of the natural business community using the hotels there is also a very large convention centre which attracts large numbers of delegates.

Cheapest rooms typically will be in Buena Park or Anaheim, close to Disney. Frequent shuttles run back to LAX.
  • Hi,

I have only been to LA once and we stayed in Hollywood which was excellent for travllelling to Hollywood itself and to Universal Studios which is where my daughter wanted to spend most of her time. As the other reply said it really depends what you are looking for and when visiting Downtown I personally thought it felt like a 'business centre' rather than somewhere to holiday. Not very much going on apart from very tall buidlings!

I would ask yourself what you would like to do when there? LA is so big that even when we went to Beverly Hills it cost around $40 in a taxi from the Hollywood area we stayed in and we were around 45 minutes to an hours drive away from Disney (I think as we booked a trip) we got the bus one day to the nearest beach and this took nearly 2 hours!

If you think about what you would like to do and then just do a goole on the area or visit somewhere like Trip Adviser and what is where this may be the bets thing.

Don't know if thi will help
  • I don't think you stated whether you will have a car or not. I agree downtown is a business district and not really for tourists.

We were in LA twice in September because we flew to there and drove to Vegas and back and flew back home from LA. First few nights were at Culver City (Doubletree Hilton on Hotwire for about £55 per night and has pool) - it's also close to a shopping mall, and close to the Interstate to drive up to Santa Monica. On the return leg, we stayed one night at Long Beach and I just loved that area. It was 107F that day though they had extreme heat, but I really liked it at Long Beach and would like to go back there some time. Stayed at Westin Long Beach, again through Hotwire and about £55 per night. Bargain!! If you won't be driving though you need to find out about the Hop on Hop off bus or something, but LA is HUGE. Like we drove for over an hour on the Interstate and we were still in LA. I'm sure it must be bigger than London. The roads can be a tad scary too (I'm not a nervous driver).

Oh, and don't park facing the wrong way or you can get a ticket as I found out haha.

It is more than 50 miles from one side of LA to the other, having stayed in Downtown I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Decide where you want to visit while you are there and look for accommodation close. LA really is the land of the car but at rush hour the freeways can be gridlocked and it can take you a long time to get anywhere. Plan ahead, if you want the beach scene, somewhere like Santa Monica or Huntington Beach would be good, Newport further down the coast is also close to Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm but miles away from Hollywood. Don't drive too far on the day you arrive, an 11 hour flight, followed by a 2 hour interrogation by immigration and customs, means you will be exhausted, I usually book a hotel close to the airport with a free shuttle bus, so no driving at all, and collect the car the next morning when you are more likey to be alert.
