COMET Extended warranty

I have an extended warranty on my Sony TV which I bought from Comet in July.

I have not been able to get through to them - surprise surprise - but an now wondering whether the policy will be valid. I paid another

instalment - £40 - just a few days ago, and one more payment remains in late November.

I thought the policy was actually with Domestic and General (the policy on a a fridge-freezer I bought from Comet this year IS with D&G) but D&G have no record of it.

Not sure what to do, or even if I should cancel the final payment due at the end of this month.

I'm sure that they have added protection for warrentys ect for if a company go bust.

A bit like the FSCS for financial products.

  • Find your policy, check who the underwriter is and ideally contact them.

You seem suggest that you are paying the warrant in instalments, is that the same as the product and it was all put on a by now pay later scheme or is it just the warranty?

If it were Dixon Stores Group then there wouldnt be, it is an unregulated product with a whole host of offshore entities being used to manage to get it outside of insurance regulation.

From other posters elsewhere however it appears Comet used the traditional route of selling third party products which makes things easier given their imminent failure.
  • I have paid for the goods but not finished paying for the warranty.

In the past some companys with cashflow problems have stopped using an underwriter and produced their own schemes.

I worked for a large regional electrical retailer about ten years ago and all 'policies' taken out under their own scheme became worthless while the earlier policies ( with Domestic Insurance Sevices ) were honoured by the insurance company.

Basically the retailer was just using the income from its warranties to ease cashflow so there was no money left to honour the warranties.

Read the section .... Information for Customers"
It says about warranties and gives a helpline phone number.
