Nice but reasonably priced in SE?

Hi we are looking to hopefully buy a house next year and will hopefully have a deposit of approx £130 000. In an ideal world it would be great to buy a house outright but I know that's unrealistic in the South East.
Our dilemma is, we don't know anywhere else really apart from where we live now! It would be nice to have a bit of a change and look for somewhere in a cheaper area so we can get 'more house for our money' than where we are now (near Redhill, Surrey). We would like somewhere in a nice village preferably. We would need to buy a 3 bedroomed house, preferably with a good sized kitchen.
Wherever we move to would need to be within commutable distance to Croydon but a nice area, not somewhere with a high crime rate etc.
Does anyone have any knowledge they'd be happy to share please?

a few contradictions in your post
"Surrey" "Village" "Cheap" and "Nice"
pick 2 and have a 3rd preference, forget the 4th!0 -
lol thanks Martinsurrey, yes I know exactly what you mean!
We were perhaps thinking Sussex or Kent but I guess the story's the same all over.
Worth a try though!

Broadly speaking the further you get away from London the cheaper the houses get - but if you go due south from Croydon for a decent commute then you're into prime stockbroker belt world to coin an old phrase. Head South East / East ish into Kent and it will be a bit cheaper but you'd need to consider the commute. Ditto with Sussex...0

If you end up in Kent, you can get to Croydon via Bromley South & Beckenham Junction (train & tram combo). It does take a while but is cheaper than going via London zone 1.0 -
Thank you both, that's helpful and worth considering...:)0

If you ever find out, can you let me know please?
First off, £130k is not going to buy you a 3 bed house outright anywhere in your search area. It will, however, give you a really good deposit, enabling you to buy somewhere without a crippling mortgage.
Have you looked at Smallfield? Prices there are generally cheaper as it's a drive to the nearest station, plus there are aircraft and motorway noise areas to avoid, but it is a village, and you get a lot more house for your money.0 -
Thanks Jody yes I agree Smallfield is a lovely village...however that would be a compromise on the commute side as we need to be within walking distance from a station.0

Walking distance from a station is going to be popular so that may rule out 'cheap'.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Yes I guess so...think will have to rethink our plans, I just kind of wanted to get people's opinions I suppose, but think I really knew that we weren't going to get anything for that amount in this area.
I think going further towards the coast brings the price down a little so will look in that direction I think.:wave:0
