Parking fine in Putney

Hi everyone,
Just wanting to get opinions regarding a parking fine I picked up whilst in Putney.
The facts:
- Coalecroft Road allows unrestricted parking outside of the hours 9.30am - 4.30pm.
- I parked at 8pm Friday night
- I returned Monday morning at 9am to pop a ticket on the car which lasted til 11.30am
- I returned at 11.15am to find a PCN slapped on my window
- I submitted a photo of my ticket and the PCN to the claims department of Wandsworth Council
- They state that different parking bays are located along the road, some allow residents parking, some allow residents parking & pay and display parking
- I apparently had parked in a residents only zone
- Each bay is flanked by a sign stating "residents only" or "residents only or pay and display".
Now I feel that this wasn't obvious. In retrospect I should have made dead certain where I was I parking was for both the public and residents, but I feel there was no obvious indication of the fact that different bays were for different purposes. No different road markings, no different colour used to mark the bay etc. There was also a pay and display pay machine at each end of the street indicating that it was OK to do so down the entire street. Plus leaves were falling from tress and had to a large extent covered up where one bay started and another finished that day as demonstrated in the Traffic Wardens photos.
If I pay within 14 days from today the fine is £65. If I appeal the decision it could rise to £195.
Have you any guidance on whether I could win an appeal or am I better off paying now and avoiding the possibility of a further £130 charge.
Many thanks
Matt

Go to www.pepipoo.com, register there and then create a new thread in the Council Parking Tickets & Clamping and Decriminalised Notices forum. You'll need to scan/photograph the original PCN (front and back) and also the correspondence you have receiver, scrub the scans of personal information (name/address/car details/reference numbers) and post them up there.
Very knowledgeable people there will then be able to advise of the best course of action.0
