Hello. all...
My son is studying in 9th Year abroad. I am planning to bring him to UK on settlement visa in April 2013 but have no idea about how he will be able to continue his studies ? will he have to be in a secondary school ? or will he have to join a college ? His birthday is OCT 1996. I get so many different advises from so many people and am so confused. I have also called the local council (schools admissions dept) and they provide information only about schools. I am in full time employment.
Can anyone please advise ?? Will i have to pay for his college or school ?? thank you...

As he was 16 after the 1st of September his leaving date will be the end of the current school year. This is what the Dof E say about it. http://www.education.gov.uk/vocabularies/educationtermsandtags/18400

thank you much for your reply...
according to the link you send me, he should finish school in June 2012 and he arrives here only in april/may 2013...so as per the details on the link it says " However, its effect is that a person who ceased to be of compulsory school age but has not yet reached the age of 18 (or attained a level 3 qualification), is under a duty to participate in education or training "
Does this mean that he will have to either take up employment on arrival or study further in a college ? but it dont say if i will have to pay for his college fees etc ? as none of my frends with kids just above 16 dont pay for their college. I know if i go to CAB they will just google for information and give me printouts. I do work full time but i am sure i wont be able to afford his college fees. pls advise...thank you.0 -
There should not be any college fees until he reaches the age of 19 years.
He should be able to join either a school sixth form or a "sixth form college". Look for a College of Further Education in your area and contact their admissions department.0 -
What qualifications has he taken so far and what does he want to study now? What level of English does he have?0

thank you all...I remember seeing "sixth form " colleges in my area.
He is right now in year 9 (9th standard) in a CBSE (central board of secondary eductaion) recognised school in India. As similiar to every year, his exams will finish in April 2013 and the results will be out and he shall be promoted to year 10th, where he will have boards exams. These are exams governed and papers checked by central authority in the capital of the country. The exam papers (in year 10th) get sent to the boards authority where the local school teachers will have no say. they just receive the results. I dont know what this all compares to the GCSE's here in UK.
The subjects he is studying right now are :
- Science (bio,chem and physics)
- maths
- English
- Hindi
- History
- Civics (civilisation and politics etc)
- Geography
- Social science
His english level ? I cant really say the level but all his course books/text books are in english and not local language. I mean when i talk to him he talks to me in english. He writes/reads, all english.
Hope this will help...thank you...0 -
Surely he will just be placed in a secondary school until the end of June and follow the usual protocol for 6th form, college etc?0

That sounds very like GCSE level. In the UK, his main choice would be whether to carry on with his general education by studying something like A levels or whether to move into some kind of vocational education/training.
I would make an appointment for yourself with Connexions (previously the Careers Service) locally. They will be able to find out exam equivalents for you, tell you about educational opportunities locally and, possibly, arrange for your son to seek advice and guidance by email.0
