ok - you are 6 weeks and cutting down.........good! may I suggest while cutting down you keep a diary? write down the times you really 'need' a ciggy! this will help you later on to identify the 'weak moments'!
can I give you a couple of tips of staving off the need?
have a drink of water - sounds simple but sometimes a drink will distract you and you can go back to what you were doing without 'lighting up'.
brush your teeth - again its 'distraction' and you wont want to lose the minty taste.
keep your hands busy! This is really helpful - if you can knit or crochet or craft then often hours can go by un-noticed!
same with 'keep your brain busy'! do wordsearch, crosswords etc! jigsaw puzzles if you are into them.
Remember that the 'desire' for a ciggy is in your brain - distract your brain and you can stave it off!
If you can get down to less than ten cigs a day - you may be ready to give up (without patches). I wouldnt actually recommend patches as they are absorbed into the body and I suspect the baby recieves just as much chemicals as if you were smoking twenty a day!

    Best wishes OP!

Why dont we go and get the op a few cans of lager aswell while were at it?
If I get banned then so be it - if being banned is the price of caring about this baby more that its mother that bring it on.

Oh shut up, my mum smoked though the whole of her pregnancy with both myself and my brother and we've never had any health issues. A few drinks also does no harm - obviously a binge is a different matter.

OP I wish you the best of luck, I always say I'm going to try and give up but unfortunately I enjoy smoking and my motivation is more through family pressure - but one day I'll get there! Try and keep yourself as busy as you can, I seem to smoke so much less when I don't have time to think about smoking :-)

I don't agree with alsoinhd but my mum smoked 10-20 a day during the first 6 months of pregnancy (didn't know she was pregnant, still having periods). I was born prematurely, jaundiced, and have various ENT issues as an adult, some of which require surgery, due to stunted development and premature birth.

I understand it's not always the case, but any baby can have health problems and things like smoking and drinking didn't seem such a huge deal years ago. Obviously it's not ideal to smoke during pregnancy and it can cause health problems for the child, but some people do with no issues - there was just no need for alsoinhd's rude post.

Patches and other NRT contain nicotine, they don't contain the 4000 other chemicals in cigarettes, so although nicotine is absorbed into the body none of the other chemicals are, making NRT preferable to smoking.
  • Hi all

I just want to say thankyou so much for all the support and advice, I was nervous posting about this subject but so glad i did. I have been put in contact with a stop smoking class which i will attend on wednesday and in the meantime they have given me a perscription for niquitin minis which i can pick up from the docs on Monday. i also intent to use an e-cig just when the cravings get a bit much. I know this is not ideal but hopefully this will be the aid to quit.

Im overwealmed by the kindness of people. maybe im just hormonal but i could hug the lot of you :)

    Thanks again xx

I think this is a bit harsh to be honest and really there is no need for it. I know the dangers hence i am doing something about it. Of course i care about my baby. I really doubt you care about my baby more than i do. As my mum used to say if you dont have anything constructive/positive to say, dont say anything!

I recommend checking out Nicorette's online support programme called Activestop. It really helped me stop 3 years ago after a 40 year habit.

    Good luck.

Beat me to it.... there's a service where you can have supportive text messages - which might be on the Nicorette's site, but also the Boots site here: http://www.webmd.boots.com/smoking-cessation/ss/slideshow-13-best-stop-smoking-tips-ever-slideshow

looks good as well. Good luck with this. If you can get your OH to give up as well, it will be easier for you in the long run.
