Large bill from out of the blue

Hi Folks

First time poster here looking for some advice.

Got home yesterday and found a dual fuel bill from EDF for nearly £700, stating that the bill is now so overdue that legal action is imminent. the letter then followed with the usual demands and threats etc.

Now here comes the interesting bit, even though the bill has my name and address on it the account number is different to that which i am currently paying (confirmed this by comparing the letter with an existing bill).

I am not really sure where this bill has come from the only thing i can think of is that about 2 years ago i changed the bank account that one of the bills came out of- theoretically this chould not have had anything to do with a change in account no.

I dont really have a spare £700 lying around to pay this bill

Any ideas on where i stand with this?, suggestions would be gratefully received

Paul

  • Check the meter number of your meter (shown on the meter) and then compare that with the meter numbers on the bills you have been paying and the new demand just received.

A phone call to EDf is required here.

When EDF changed from issueing a single bills for Gas and Elec, to a single bill covering both the Gas & Elec, they also changed the account number.

As you have been paying your bills by D/Debit, I suspect that there is a screw-up in the EDF system whereby your payments have not been recorded on the Single bill system

As advised by notbritishgas, check the meter numbers on past bills and this new one.- Also check the meter readings and dates on the past bills for duplication on the new bill.

If it is an accounts foul-up, because EDF appear to have already gone into wolverine collection mode, it's important you act quickly by sending an Email headed Complaint

I had this happen a number of years ago when a now defunct company "Eastern Energy" started sending me bills even though I wasn't supplied by them - turned out to be for another house nearby. It is worth checking the meter number match with previous bills (not the account numbers) and also double checking them with the relevant grid authorities (Transco for gas and the distribution network organisation in your area - generally if you look up who to contact in the event of a supply fault or leak in your area they are the ones to contact for meter number queries).
