Tax credits - whose right?

Does anyone know why the tax credit amounts we receive are so different from the amounts given when I put my details in to the revenue online form and on https://www.entitledto.co.uk.

I have a overpayment to repay, but the amount my award is reduced by seems to differ compared to what we're told on our TC award note, and what it would be if I take the overpayment amount from the amounts given by the website.

The amounts differ by around 30 pounds per month.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

My partner and I are really struggling financially and are on the verge of a break-up due to our constant arguments regarding money.

  • I think on entitledto.co.uk and the tax credits website are only based on an estimate and just give you an idea of what to expect.

    Hi,
Have you spoken to the the Tax Credits Office and asked why? Sometimes the figures given on other websites (not sure about the ones you have mentioned) are not entirely accurate. Sometimes they may have put in a wrong figure at the TC Office.
Would it help to ask to have the money they take back for the overpayment reduced a bit as you are having financial difficulties? In some instances you are allowed to not repay the overpayment if it would cause you severe financial hardship, but what those instances are I dont know.
You may 'benefit' from a benefit calculation done by the Jobcentre, they are accurate to within £5, but 90% of the ones I have seen have been spot on. They may be able to advise you if you are entitled to claim anything else or maybe your partner is entitled to certain things.
You dont say what your circumstances are, but if you rent rather than having a mortgage you may be able to get housing benefit to help with the rent and the council tax.
If you have a mortgage, is it worth contacting your lender and asking for 6 months where you can make a reduced payment while you work through this glitch?
Good luck, I know things seem much bigger and worse than what they are when your skint, but it will get better

    Kind Regards

    Sarah

PS I have sold most of my house on ebay to release some of the financial pressures on us, and it has driven OH and Daughters mental, lol, they threaten to nail down any possessions just in case.

Have you taken in to account that entitledto estimates for the whole year where thet HMRC one estimtes only from today until the end of the year.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
