Router problem

This is not a major problem but an annoying one.
I have netgear router gateway so that I can have a pc and a laptop connected to the internet at the same time.
It works fine 99% of the time but I do have a slight problem. And I only noticed since I have gone back to using the router. As for a while I only had one machine that needed to be connected to the internet so a direct connection was used.
Anyway the problem that I have noticed is when I boot the everything up first thing in the morning to login. That the laptop does not always connect to the internet first time. I check and all the lights are blinking on the router and the cable modem. But when I open up my browser it tells me that it can't find the home page.
If I re-boot the laptop it is ok. I personally can't see why there is a problem as once the lights are flashing on the front of the router/cable modem I am connected.
I was not aware that I had to switch things on in a certain order. The laptop and router/modem are all on one power strip making it easy to switch on and off.
I do know a bit about computers but this has just fazed me. As there was no problem with a direct connection. And if I use the laptop later on in the day and everything has been switched off and back on again it is fine. It is only first switch on of the day.
Is it just a case of not turning on the laptop until the lights on the router/modem are flashing.
Many thanks for any ideas in advance.

My router is permanently switched on 24/7 but I know that when you first boot them up they need time to establish a connection before you receive a signal to attached devices."An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

This morning I booted up the router and cable modem and waited until they both had flashing lights on and then turned on the laptop still the same problem.
Reckon I should boot up router and cable modem and then go and have a cup of coffee and then boot up the laptop.
But what I don't understand this never use to be a problem before. As with all electric items that don't need to be plugged in 24/7 I turned them off over night as they do use electric and I worry about they catching fire. As long as I have had the router like 3/4 years I have been doing the same.
It is had only been in the last 6 months that it has been causing problems. The firmware upgrade did not help either.
Just reckon it is something that I am going to have put up with.
never mind. As I said not life threatening just annoying.

Are you talking about wireless connection here? So by "direct connection" you mean wired, and now you are saying you are having problems with wireless?
If you are you should check your wireless settings; both in Windows and on the router. For example, check that you have DHCP enabled and working properly, and that you haven't told any of your PC wireless hardware to seek a fixed IP address on the network - and that you haven't switched the router to fixed IP addressing. Remember, although networking is quick, there is a delay when the PC wireless device has to wait to be handed an IP address by the router, then it must find the gateway out to the internet (usually the IP of the address of the router on the network).
So when booting up your PC you should wait a bit longer to see if it finds the network or internet. You can check in windows in network connections and then right click for the properties of the connection you want, to look to see if the PC knows it has an IP address on the network and whether it knows the gateway. This would allow you to narrow down the problem; if the connection has an IP address then its connected to the actual network (ie. the router), if it also has a gateway IP address only then is it connected to the internet through the network.
Its quite possible although the PC can connect to the router and network, the cable modem hasn't connected to the internet in time (and the router seen it) for there to be a gateway to the internet. I reckon you should try leaving them both on (router and modem) overnight after you know they are working and see what happens when you boot up in the morning.0 -
No it is not wireless.
I could leave it on over night. But it just seem to be the cold boot 1st thing in the morning.
If I use the laptop first thing in the morning and then switch everything off at the wall and don't use the machine untill the evening it is all fine.
The laptop is set up to get IP and DNS automatically.
Not sure how the cable modem has not connected as I never get the problem when using a direct connection to the cable modem. And booting up both at the exactly the same time.
So I believe it to be a router problem.
But will try and see if it is ok in the morning. But I do think it is something that I will have to put with. And just remeber to let it all warm up and have a coffee first.
Thanks to everyone for there ideas.
