B/Gas-anyway out of it?

I moved into my property on 21/10/06 and took a gas meter reading, then Npower transferred me over to them on the 29/11/06.
British Gas are saying that I owe them £119 for a months gas supply! I've phoned, emailed (after numerous mistakes on their part) and I've now written and complained but they're like a broken record, just repeating the same thing 'You used it, now pay for it'. I think this is an extortianate amount for a month. Is there any way round this?
Thanks

If you have both meter readings, the one when you moved in and the one you when you have transferred, then contact energywatch (http://www.energywatch.org.uk) and make a complaint to them stating you your bill has been calculated incorrectly.
For future reference only change utility suppliers once you have had one full billing cycle i.e. 3 months as they all muck up otherwise.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

very simple answer to this..ring up BG...ask what the opening read was to the account..it should be correct,,, Npower will have told BG what the closing read was...I would hope that you took note of the read when you moved suppliers, if not ask npower to dispute the opening read for them..which will be the closing read for British Gas..they will ask you for 2 back up reads..so take one now whilst you have read this message and one in 5 days time they will then work your daily consumption...
British Gas do not make the closing read for the account when you leave them..Its the new supplier..Hey folks...remember I might work for the company but I am a human and working in my own time, I will not responde to people who are rude, sarcy and crits me. My views and comments do not reflect British Gas and they are totally unreasponsable for my responses.0 -
Thankyou for your help guys! I have sent my details to energywatch and am waiting for a reply.;)0

Why do you think £119 for 40 days(nearly 6 weeks) in winter, presumably at BG Standard rate(before their price decrease) is extortionate?
Do you have the meter readings to say they are wrong?0 -
£119 is quite a lot of money for just under 6 weeks, even in winter.
But it could be correct, based on the readings they've got.
If the OP didn't check the meter readings when they moved in, they haven't got much of a leg to stand on IMHO.0 -

Agree with all 3 points.
However the OP doesn't say what type/size of property, how well insulated, cooking with gas?
Whilst £20 a week in winter is probably slightly more than average, it in no way could be termed "extortionate". Also, even allowing that BG's standard rate at that time was the highest price available, Npower rates were not a huge amount lower for new customers(10%?) so it is hardly going to turn 'extortionate' into 'wonderful'!0 -

Why waiste energy watches time, they will only send what you have sent to them to British Gas....contact British Gas as i said in my previous post and ask them....Please folks dont waist energywatchs time just because you cant be botherd to call the energy company...Hey folks...remember I might work for the company but I am a human and working in my own time, I will not responde to people who are rude, sarcy and crits me. In all fairness sounds like he has had a go at sorting it out.
Check you have been billed from the meter reading you took when you moved in. If you have, or if you didn't take one, then as said above there is very little BG can or will do. You only have grounds for complaint if you gave them a reading when you moved in and they won't use it.0
