Canon EOS 500D accessories

For nature shots, I suggest a couple of collapsible reflectors and some decent croc clips so he can control the light on the snowdrops in the hedgerow! There are great non-branded inexpensive ones on t'interweb, for instance http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lastolite-48cm-white-gold-reflector-/370680655094 (actually lastolite is a top brand) secondhand, or similar things are similar prices new off-brand.
You can also get 'macro' adaptors inexpensively, which would mean he can take extra-close-up photos, very valuable for insects, leaves, flowers, berries. They need an 'EF' fitting which means just about any Canon compatible accessories in the past 10 years will be just fine - you don't need anything specially for a 500D, any modern Canon accessory will fit.0 -
have been taking photographs since I was a teenager in 70s
Ah - a mere youngster !but of course the quality of pictures is limited more by the skill of the person behind the camera than the kit they're using.
Unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the line of thought in many of today's "photographers" - the more expensive (and newer) your kit the "better" you are. I find it all rather sad, TBH.
The "megapixel myth" rules ...........
I change my camera, TV, car, 'phone, shoes, PC, etc, etc when they're clapped out - not before.0 -
