I would. This time of year when we are flat out I have to prioritise customer calls.

Those that don't state that it is a boiler breakdown and nothing is working get put down the list.

When really busy, then I prioritise between the eldery/sick, mothers with young babies and existing customers etc etc.
  • Thanks to everybody for the advice. I called him again and explained the problem. As I live within half a mile of him he said he could come today. He arrived within 1.5 hours. That's what I call service. :j

All he needed to do was service the boiler and fit a new thermocoupler. I now know what the inside of my boiler looks like and what is a thermocoupler. He also said that the old boilers can go on and on as there is less to go wrong on them.

He suggeested I get a wireless room thermostat as I don't have a central one only thermostatic values on each radiator. I rely on these (though I think one is not working very well) and the programme timer on the boiler. Are they worth the money

not necessarily thermocouple, pilot jet may need cleaning, does pilot flame constantly envelop thermocouple?
Good advice,I have a 28 year old boiler that had the same problem, replaced the themocouple and still had the same problem.I then cleaned the pilot light jet and 'hey presto' all worked ok.

Yes, they will save a substantial amount. The point being that it will switch the boiler off when the air temperature reaches the required level.

Without it, the boiler will just stay on all the time and use far more gas than necessary.

Doesn't have to be wireless, although that was probably suggested as it would be much easier and less destructive than installing a wired type.
