Think I have broke my printer, first time putting in new cartridges removed the yellow strip put cartridges in slot only didn't see the red lug I should have removed as well, printer says it does not recognise the black ink ,I removed them all again and was about to replace cartridges when I saw a gold piece of foil on cartridge holder looks like it is one of the teeth from the black plug on the back of cartridge case.
The last printer place I used took 4weeks and then did not mend printer despite charging and they were epson credited.
This is a 510w just wanted to be certain I have cackered it.

Is it out of warranty?
Did you get a guarantee from the people who didn't fix it, if so, is it still current?0 -
No guarantee left ,looked up order on J lewis and it was 2010 oct
It was my old Epson that I had repaired but when it failed 3rd time I swopped it for this one.I only use it for coupon printing and bits ,but my D/D at uni bought her a canon at the same time she's had no problem ,she is home at present and not best pleased with me ,thinks me unable to assemble anything ,although I do all the DIY in the house.0 -
A number of printers will not recognise a cartridge once it has been removed. Try a new cartridge, if it still fails then you will need a new printer I am afraid.
If you do need a new printer, check first on https://www.choicestationery.co.uk the cost of compatible inks and buy your new printer on that basis. My Mind wanders, if found please return.0 -
Argos have an Epson SX130 for £28 at the moment
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9371424.htm
If you need wireless then they have an SX235W for £35 at the moment
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9040425.htm
Check for better prices but both those will have compatible inks available and are probably cheaper than a visit to a repair centre0 -
Agree with Santer, those Epson wireless printers are good, fairly straightfoward to set up and the inks are separate colours and cheap. My Mind wanders, if found please return.0

If as I understand it, the gold part has fallen off the printer, then it will be as cheap to replace the printer as it will be to get it repaired.
If it has fallen off the cartridge then replacing the cartridge will solve it0 -
My experience with Epson over the years is it is cheaper to replace than repair. When they start going wrong 'bin them' its cheaper in the long run.

would it be possible for you to take a picture of the gold foil in the cartridge holder, so we can get an idea if it came from the cartridge or the actual holder.
but you do have 2 options both mentioned above.
1 buy a compatible cartridge to replace the damaged cartridge a full set would set you back around £5 or less via ebay.
2 buy another printer, note: sx235w is a ALL-IN-ONE same as your 515,0
