My wife does not want me to take any time off, we are going on the advice of the doctor who is doing the operation.

What I would do if your employer is unwilling, is go back to the hospital/doctor and say that there is noone available to stay with her for this amount of time, that way they can possibly arrange support for that week if it is necessary or indeed keep her in a few more days before discharge.

    What milliemonster said.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Ok, in that case before she comes home she should have physio assessments who will be able to work with her on her mobility so she should be able to get about the house when she is home independently, the only issue she is going to have really is lifting which she shouldn't be doing for a week or so. There is no reason why she can't be left alone when she is home, she just doesn't want to be doing any heavy lifting/shopping etc.

Sometimes doctors live in a utopian world where they think everyone has an endless pot of money, can do what they like regarding their employers and while in an ideal world I'm sure it would make your wife's first week at home easier if you were there with her, it certainly isn't essential, make sure she has access to plenty of cups of tea, chocolate and the remote and I am sure she will be fine til you get home

The doctor did not say that YOU have to be with her 24hrs a day.

If she needs someone to be with her, you/she need to arrange for friends and family to come and sit with her.

You certainly have no legal right to take time off work in these circumstances and could be disciplined or possibly even dismissed if you defy your boss and take time off work anyway.

I will try and talk to the boss tomorrow to see if we can come to some sort of compromise, my fear now is that i will get dismissed, as we all know there is little to no work around, i have been with this employer for the past 13 years i have never stepped out of line in any way before and would reach all daily targets + receive a yearly bonus and a yearly pay rise.
Only recently another colleague got four days off to go running, without any hassle.

There really is'nt any need for you to get into trouble with work or end up losing your job. I had the same op as you wife and i managed fine at home on my own while everyone was at work. I stayed in bed for a few days, plenty of magazines, tv remote, bottled water and a packed lunch made up for me before hubby left. It is important though that your wife does keep mobile, just gentle excersise to the loo and having a nosey through the window. I have other health problems and mobility problems but apart from being blinkin sore found it ok.

The wife is having a Hysterectomy

I had an abdominal hysterectomy a few years ago and no one was with me for 24 hours a day when I came home.

I wasn't able to lift anything so my husband would make sure that everything I might need was accessible before he left for work. I was able to make a sandwich for lunch and cups of tea.

He would help me shower before he went (I had to wear lovely elastic stockings for a week so he helped me remove them and put them back on) and then he would help me downstairs where I had a duvet etc on the sofa.

I managed to shuffle around when necessary all day (couldn't go upstairs alone without a lot of pain though) until he came home and made dinner.

If you can't take the time off, just be very organised. As long as your wife can call you or someone else in an emergency (and she'll probably be fine) you don't really need to be there.

Do you have young children? Is that why you need to be at home, is parental leave a solution?

I went to speak to the boss today and he refused to discuss the matter, our children are up and away from home,
The place i work operate a no phone call policy no matter the circumstances, both are families live some distance away.
