Paypal changed address unprompted?

So, here's an interesting one!

I moved house back in July. I had emailed PayPal to ask them to change my address for me as I only had internet access on my phone and their mobile site doesn't allow you to make such account changes. I had a response saying that was fine and to give them all the info I wanted changing. I went ahead and gave them the new address then asked them to remove my old address entirely.

In August, once I could access PayPal from a computer again, I checked on the account and saw the old address was still present. I set the new address as my primary address and deleted the old address.

I have bought numerous things since moving house, with no problem. A couple of days ago I got a PayPal email saying an item had been despatched - to my old, deleted address.

I logged onto PayPal to find that there are several instances of my old address, with different variations of both my married and maiden names, all with different prefixes and various longer/shorter versions both my new and old address. My old address was somehow miraculously set as my default and "home" address.

I have contacted PayPal. After roughly a dozen emails of people skirting my queries and telling me HOW to change my address, I've finally got a response with someone saying that PayPal are unable to make these changes and therefore I must have/have not made the changes, and it's not a PayPal error.

A quick Google search revealed someone on the eBay forum talking about a similar incidence earlier this month.

I am not too fussed about the item going to the wrong address as it is just around the corner and I'm still friends with my old neighbour; but what if that wasn't the case? PayPal seem completely disinterested in taking any responsibility for the situation, which I am fairly confident in stating IS their error. I have proof (in my emails) that I had asked them to (a) change my address and (b) remove my old address.

It really feels like I am banging my head against the wall. It doesn't seem right/fair that they can make such a massive mistake and act like it's me that's messed up. Has anybody else has this? Can any one offer any advice around what to do next?

I'm afraid I can't be a whole lot constructive; PayPal are absolutely useless; a nightmare to deal with an disinterested in actually being helpful to customers. They attempted to reclaim £700 from me for an item I sold, despite me providing full proof of delivery (royal mail special delivery), it was never resolved and went to a debt collector who eventually gave up when I sent them an inch-thick document package in response to every one of their communications. I didn't worry as it never showed on my credit file.
Later their system decided to pay with an entirely different card to the one I selected, causing me to go over my limit an incur charges. They insisted that it couldn't have happened and just accused me; despite the fact that the card it was supposed to have used was set as default (I double-checked again & again), and I didn't enter in to change the method.

Didn't mean this to sound like a rant, just to encourage you to leave it as you will give yourself brain damage banging your head against this particular wall.

  • That's really interesting, thanks for sharing.

I can't believe a company can get away with being so utterly incompetent. I feel quite backed into a corner as there doesn't really seem to be a widely accepted alternative (and you HAVE to have a PayPal account to sell on eBay!). At least I've not gone insane, as I was starting to question.

    Roll on a better alternative.

There's this paper you can get with a picture of Her Majesty on which I am rather fond of. Doesn't get smaller with each transaction, either!
