But this vote is also a damning verdict on the lunatic side of the tory party, the fact that some are willing to side with Labour to undermine their own leader beggars belief.

I thought MP's (of all parties) were in Parliament to represent the views of the electorate.

Seems reasonable that the PM should hold a compromise view. Given that it is he who has to negotiate.

Very easy to sound tough. Nothing worse then failing to deliver.

    You'd think so, wouldn't you?

But politicians vote for anything that keeps them in office.
Regardless of what the voters want.

What actually happens if a member state just refuses to pay any more?

One of them goes and gets his big brother.

I've always wondered that myself or just stops paying?

I guess they would just freeze all inter trade payments into the UK and sequestrate assets of UK companies and individuals?

I am pretty sure they could not do that. I get the impression that is mainly BS and would all fall apart if one or two countries just said "here's what we are prepared to pay, take it or leave it".

Personally I believe that the economic/financial issues we face transcend traditional political boundaries. Someone with balls has got to make some pretty unpalatable decisions (from the electorates point of view).

I'm pretty sure they could do anything they wanted to and get away with it.

We could no doubt challenge them through the courts or dust of the hardware, oh no we just sold it..
