Since you say that the place is an HMO, are there any other current flatmates you can ask if the previous tenant did move out or not? Has he/she left any personal belongings in the house?
Nevertheless, this is an issue between your LL and the previous tenant. Your involvement is only if the room is not empty. The lack of inventory indeed will suit you.
As for the deposit, did you get a receipt for it? If so, you are OK. Within 30 days (of paying the deposit), it must be protected and you must receive proof of that (the prescribed information), but it's too early to raise this issue.
Does the contract have the name and address of the landlord for serving notices (s47 and s48)?You wanna hear about my new obsession?

Thank you. I've just been informed by the landlord that the previous tenant has a) served notice by letter and b) has left (why he sent me an ambiguous message before I have no idea). Still not entirely sure why the locks are being changed though.
I didn't know there was 30 days to protect the deposit so thank you for that. I think it was about a week or 2 ago I paid the deposit (by bank transfer).
No name and address on contract for landlord, which is a bit off really but house is in a lovely condition and 1 previous tenant was happy with him doing repairs/being contactable by phone/email etc and he's always answered my texts/email etc so far. IF I need to serve notice/enforce any repairs I would download registry title and serve notice at the property (he also owns another one down the road).
I don't actually think he's dodgy, just very, very relaxed and not had any issues up until now.

The rent is not due without an address at which to serve notices, worries me a little that the landlord does not know this. Whose name is on there, a letting agents? If so you can write to them and ask for an address

Be careful reporting things by text or telephone, it doesn't give you a paper trail. letter or e-mail is much better and recommended by Shelter. Anything can happen between now and he end of the tenancy - the landlord might be repossessed or sell to another landlord, in which case you could end up with someone stroppy about what you have or have not formally reported.
