HSBC Graduate Loan - PPI reclaimable?

Hi,
Although I'm a little late to the party on PPI reclaims, while sorting through old paperwork I noticed on a statement from 2004 that I paid off a loan (only had a year or two to go) and had a PPI amount refundable.
I don't have all the details as yet as I'm waiting for HSBC to get back to me. My thoughts are that this was a graduate loan taken out before I was employed. I didn't realise that I would be paying an upfront PPI on the loan, but i'm not sure if this is reclaimable as if I was a student / unemployed when the loan was taken out and therefore PPI could have been useful...
any thoughts?
Thanks!
