Bales of hay are much cheaper, though be careful not to let them get damp. They'll also make appealing homes to mice and rats so you may want to consider storing them hung up from the roof or similar!

For general bedding I used a product called Ecobed, shredded cardboard squares, originally designed as a horse bedding for hroses with respiratory issues as it's dust-free. There's lots of similar products with various names - Finacard, Ecopetbed, Ecobale, etc. - farm shops may stock it, if not try equestrian supply shops.

That's good news that you've found a cheaper source of hay. I was interested in the fleece idea, but for my rabbits I'd be worried that they would eat it. Hay's a key part of their diet so best to make sure they've got plenty of this I think rather than risking them munching on the fleece.

Mind you, one of my rabbits ate a big chunk out of the plastic mesh from one of the garden chairs (children left it tipped over and it was evidently in her territory) without any ill effects!

Mine would eat fleece! Good news about the hay, it's the best thing for them and should keep them warm too :j
  • we always used lots of newspaper for our guinea pigs. They do get a bit grey though if they are white from the print! You don't have to shred it finely, we used about one inch wide strips shredded by hand. Cereal packets/shoe boxes inside the hutch make great little hideaways for guinea pigs just watch out for staples. If you don't normally buy a newspaper maybe ask your neighbours/friends for theirs? Look out for any free papers sometimes shops have them advertising special offers.
