Help with choosing a laptop & transferring data please!

Options
My v. old computer is dying rapidly (keeps locking up, closing down on its own!) Have decided a lap top would be nice, but don't need anything special - just to do e mail\internet\photos & some music - and with the ability to watch DVD's. I don't think I want this new Vista system, but it seems they all come with it! Any recommendations?

Once purchased I'm terrified about transferring the progs\data etc - my computer competence is zero. Is there an "idiots guide" to what order things should be done, I doubt if I have many of the original CD's for re installing! Should I get connected to the net first so I can down load progs, but am on dial up only at the moment - broadband will be the next hurdle.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Why not try following the steps in the Malware removal guide to see if you can sort out your PC before buying another one.

Thanks, but I think its more like something "loose" inside, as it shuts off if you knock it and I have to tip it up to start it the last time!
