paypal problem = Visa technical hitch

My mum has purchased a small item on ebay, total value inc p&p is less than £3. she has 25 feedback all for small purchases.

she tried to pay with her paypal account with the same debit/credit card she always pays with but for some reason it won't work today.

i have logged into my mums ebay and paypal accounts and tried to pay for her but when i attempt to pay with the card i got this message:

"This transaction failed because we were unable to verify this credit card through our card validation process. In order to proceed with your transaction, please select a different funding method or add a different credit card."

then there was an option to retry, so all i did was click on "retry"

next screen says something like "your payment of £X.XX to XXXXXXXXX was successful"

but when i checked paypal account it had not been paid for

so i try again and get the same message

""This transaction failed because we were unable to verify this credit card through our card validation process. In order to proceed with your transaction, please select a different funding method or add a different credit card."

but this time there is just the option "contine" below it

i press continue and get taken back to my mums ebay buying summary

any ideas how to resolve this?

It could be any number of things. Most likely is that the transaction has been refused for some reason, although it is possible it has gone through.

I would suggest she phones the credit card provider to see what the problem is. They will be able to tell her if it has been refused, or alternatively if the transaction has gone through.

I'd try ringing paypal, or do what they said and add another payment method if you have one available. Just sounds like they are having a problem accessing the current one (you never bin in a shop and had a card declined for absoluterly no reason?)

it hasn't gone through as paypal account shows no payment

i think it's a debit card not a credit card

i'm not sure if my mum has another card that she wants to use

i have told her to phone paypal

She's not had a new card recently and thus the verification number on the back (the 3 digit) has changed?
It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.

Please do not buy animals from a pet store. Visit your local sanctuary or centre and give a good home to an unloved or abandoned animal.

    Technical hitch hits Visa cards

Visa has apologised to its customers for the problems
A technical hitch has affected Visa transactions across Europe, leading to some cards being declined.

London-based Visa confirmed it had first noticed problems with transactions early on Friday morning.

It added that immediate action was being taken to resolve the problem, but it was unable to put a figure on the number of transactions affected.

Central Europe and Nordic countries have been the areas most affected by the problem.

"We are currently experiencing some technical problems in our card transaction processing," Visa spokesman Simon Kleine said in a statement.

"In some cases this is resulting in card transactions being declined. Immediate action is being taken to overcome this problem and we hope to have a full service resumed as soon as possible."

    Cards rejected

A Danish firm that handles credit card transactions - Payment Business Services (PBS) - was one of the first to become aware of the problem.

The company said it had begun to notice problems with Visa payments shortly before 03:00 GMT, with cards being rejected two hours later.

Visa was unable to confirm when the system would be back up and running, however he added that the problem appeared to be minimal in the UK because a back-up system had been put in place.

He added that the firm had received a "number of calls" about the problem in the UK, but that has now been declining, and customers in the UK should no longer be affected by the glitch.

Mr Kleine added that the company noticed the problem mid-morning after it had begun to update its system in the early hours of Friday.
