Getting my deposit back

I am currently planning on moving out of a property after having had enough of the awful landlord. He has constantly taken my rent without maintaining the property, including not fixing the dishwasher or leaky shower, expecting me to pay for water damage from him not fixing leaks and constantly demanding inspections. Basically he's been a right royal pain in the :money:.
I suspect he'll try to steal as much of my deposit as he can.
Since I'm moving to the US for a few years, I figure I'll just not pay the rent for the next 2-3 months, that'll cover the deposit, plus some for my trouble.
What do you guys think, good idea?

bad idea, when you do come back to the UK with intentions to get credit (mortgage,CC, Etc) you will get no where. Just be honest and play the game...your deposit isn't with you landlord and any invalid points he raises you can argue0

Is your deposit lodged with one of the three schemes? If the landlord takes you to court and gets a CCJ that will be on your credit file for SIX years. You may want or need to come back if the move doesn't work out or to recuperate if you fall ill or injured for example.
It would be a good idea to write to the landlord reporting ALL the faults with property, listing your previous contacts and asking for them to be resolved. The landlord cannot charge you for water damage for leaks that were not your fault UNLESS you failed to report them in a timely manner. Template letters on the Shelter charity website.

Contact each of three tenancy deposit schemes - TDS, mydeposits, and DPS to check whether he has registered your tenancy deposit as required by law.
As FF says, report all maintenance and reapirs issues in writing and keep a copy. Follow Shelter's guidance on how to get repairs done - pdf on the topic on their website
LL cannot unilaterally decide to make deductions from your tenancy deposit.
Don't not pay your rent - that puts you in breach.0
