How to get a job when you can't drive

People are telling me not to restrict my search to a 5 miles radius but to 10, even though 4-5 miles is pushing it in terms of making it on time and the regularity of buses after 5pm here.

How can I get a job that starts before 8-9am when buses don't start til 8am, if it's located 10 miles away and there's only one every 30 minutes, if it turns up? Am I in the right to keep within 5 miles?

  • I live in Bridlington and I know a lot of people like yourself. The jobcentre say you have to look for jobs that are within 60mins travel time from your house using public transport. Their is no work here really bar in the summer time and the people I know are just honest with the jobcentre about their travel restrictions. Just be honest with the jobcentre, they may say can you move house to be more central to a town but in this day and age, it costs a lot of money to move.
Like I said just be honest with the jobcentre. It would be silly to go for jobs you may not be able to get to as you would soon get the boot if you where late a lot etc.
    Good Luck

if i were you i would get a good quality second hand bicycle if you travelling in a rural area you would cover 1 mile every 5 minutes no problem if it is a urban area it would probably take a little longer

Also the positive effects cycling has on your mental and phyical health is amazing . it has to be experienced to be believed

Taxi's where I live charge a minimum of £6.00 and thats just local for a 3 mile journey, so if it was a bit further away you could double that for one way. Making it financially unviable.

I think this has been increased to 90 minutes fairly recently.

That is not the case everywhere - minimum fare where I live is £2.60.

I guess but they're really expensive here.

While I could probably cope with an occassional bike ride it takes me longer to recover each time due to weak muscles/dyspraxia... after a few days of 2+ hours of cycling I don't think I'd have the energy to do work, that's if I wasn't in pain lol.

    Thankyou

Depends on your income, doesn't it?

Sure does, if I couldn't drive I would go with the push bike option, plus it's a great way of getting fit.
