Cut the grass?

I moved into my house 5 weeks ago and it has a small lawn back and front. The lawn was beautiful, like a snooker table actually. It took me about 3 weeks to get round to buying a mower and then it was wet. The grass has grown and some of it has seed heads. Is it the wrong time to cut it? Any advice gratefully received.

Set your mower to its highest setting and cut your lawn, its best if the grass is dry as it wont pull as much but if it is a new mower then the blades should be sharp and it will cut reasonably well even if the grass is damp.
Generaly speaking, grass will grow when the temp gets above about 5C and there is a little sunshine so if need be you might have to cut again before winter is over, I have actually cut my lawn in December and February during mild winters and I live in Fife.0 -
I'd advise trying to get it cut if you can. The longer it grows, the more moss you are likely to accumulate over winter, which will be difficult to remove once Spring arrives. At this time of year it's best to mow mid afternoon to allow some of the overnight heavy dew & moisture to evaporate as really wet grass will clog the mower blades. You may have to raise the mower blades for the first cut & then slightly lower them, but don't scalp the grass in case heavy frost then damages it. If the weather stays mild in winter you could find yourself mowing all year round to keep it under control & looking neat. . We once had to cut the lawn on a mild New year's Day because it had grown so much.0

interesting.
I was taught that in over the winter months it was best to raise the height of the mower slightly to run the grass a tad taller than usual. The theory being that it gives the plant strength and allows more favourable survival characteristics over moss.
Also that frequent mowing was better than intermittent. If it was a fantastatic lawn, were they retired people living before you? In my experience its only people with a lot of time who can afford to keep a lawn looking stunning. As a working man I just don't have the time.
Don't know where I picked that info up from but would love to know if I'm doing it wrong.0
