Insurance Fraud Help.

I have recently over heard a 'friend' of mine talking about car insurance and how he kept his premiums low by putting me down as the main driver and using my address because it was cheaper than his, I have let my 'friend' use my address in the past as a safe postbox because mail was going missing from his flats.

My concern is, if he has any sort of accident in his car will it still affect my own policy (even though i havnt given permission to use my details) when renewal comes? I know the V5 isnt in my name because i would have had it by now from the DVLA. Thanks

Report it to the company; I'd be concerned with being connected to this. My driving license still shows 44 ABC road, when we moved into 32 several years ago; I've put 2 claims through, and as my car is declared 'parked on road' at that postcode, they didn't question it (my insurance says 32). Anything more than that is pushing it.

I've been honest with the insurer from day one, though.

It would render his policy invalid, but wouldn't affect your policy as far as I'm aware.

My main worry would be if he had to claim on his policy, with me being down as the main driver i would have to declare it when i renewed my own but what if i didnt know he made a claim and i renewed without declaring? I could have my own policy cancelled couldnt i?

How would i find out what company he is with?

Any claims your friend has are irrelevant to you and your own motor insurance.

As long as you answer everything correctly for your own insurance then you have nothing to worry about.

askmid.com allows you to find insurer details of another party if you have had been involved in an accident with them.

You could just tell him you are about to renew your insurance - ask him who he uses and would he recommend them. Then phone his insurer and drop him in the brown stuff.

Very dangerous to let someone use your address as a post box.

Hi all, thanks for all your replies. I have had a word with my friend about this and it turns out I caught him just in time as he was only planning to use me on his policy but now I know about it its not happening. I have got a good driving record to protect (hgv, car and bike) and my insurance premiums are very low so there is no way i would let him use me or be any party to his games.

  • Honest question here - how do you know if the friend is telling the truth?

Suggestion - keep a look out for any mail from an insurance company that arrives at your address.

Others suggest that you have nothing to worry about - I disagree - if they think you are in any way complicit in this practise (and in a way you are by letting him use your address) you could find yourself uninsurable at renewal time if they put you on their blacklist.
  • I think it unlikely the OP will have a problem.

If somebody applies for a policy in his name, using his address then guess where the policy document will be delivered to and whose name will be on the envelope.

If, when he opens it, he finds a policy insuring car he does not own he can call the insurer and tell them there seems to be some mistake because he does not own it and has not applied for a policy to cover it. As far as he is aware, it is owned by the person listed on it as a named driver and his address is ....

An insurer could, of course, send the documentation to your fairweather friend's address. However, as soon as they are asked to do that they are going to want to know why - particularly as you will not appear there on credit checks but the named driver does.

At this point, somebody is thinking - "yes but that means the OP will have had an application for insurance declined and will have to declare it". That is not true. The OP cannot have an application he never made declined.
