As from the link above it is not just the GDC but trading standards , the department of health, NHS, habia and babtac (beauticians organisations) who know the law regarding tooth whitening assessment and treatment as the practice of dentistry no matter what chemicals are used. The prosecutions this year would also seem to say the courts agree.
from the NHS website http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/dentalhealth/Pages/teeth-whitening.aspx
and a few cases where beauticians are prosecuted for illegal practice of dentistry by tooth whitening

Hi there,
Would appreciate some advice on what to do.
Three months ago, in July bought a Groupon for Invisible braces at 700.00 for one arch with additional 400.00 if I wanted both arches done.
This was with the Aesthetics and Dental Clinic in Shrewsbury, 8A College Hill, Shrewsbury, Shropshire SY1 1LZ.
I went for my first appointment in August first week, had assessment and they adviced its best to do the lower arch first and then upper arch, so the full 1100.00 it would cost me in total. The lower teeth were crowded, so they decided its best to grind them on the sides in order to make extra space, so they can be puched back in.
I thought that sounded okay, as generally they are about 2k plus.
So went for several appointments and they took impressions five weeks ago, saying they'll send me the first aligner in the post in a week's time with a follow up appoinment made five weeks down the line. Its nealy been five weeks now, still not received it. Each time I ring/text the clinic, they say that the packet has gone missing and lab is remaking them and i'll recieve them in a week's time. This has been on going for four-five weeks now.
Im getting very frustrated as Ive not received anything. No point in even attending the follow up appointment, as ive not recieved anything.
Whats the best course of action, I'm going to complain to Groupon as this is a joke.
I have a family of dentist (not necessarily specialising in alighners), but theyve told me, the lab doesnt generally take too long, its a simple procedure to make aligners.
I feel I've been badly ripped off.
I also want to take it further, can someone advice me, what I can do. Dental body?
Would appreciate it.
Hi there,
Can you please help!! I'm having the same problem and was wondering if you got your aligner in the end? I've been waiting nearly 2 months and after many phone calls and lots of promises I'm still with no aligner
I would appreciate the help.

Is this the same clinic?
As posted before you should choose an orthodontist on recommendation, not on price or special offers. The laboratory costs for most of these systems can start at well over a thousand pounds which is why most orthodontist charge much more than these special offers. It does make you wonder what has to be cut in order to make any money on these offers.
Raise a complaint , in writing, with the practice. Give them a set amount of time to respond. If no good then raise a complaint with groupon, and if you paid by credit card with your credit card company. Hopefully that should sort things out.0 -
I'm wondering if there is a problem at the aligner company, could be if UK based?0

Interesting, I've also been having no end of issues with this company i.e. I was told I'd only need to attend every 3-6 months, yet I had to go every 4 weeks (costing a fortune in fuel), endless delayed aligners, phone calls not returned, I was left with a severly broken brace for 3 months without action, and now my teeth are still not perfect but I just don't have the will or energy to resolve. My advice - avoid this company.0

I know the feeling, they have dont the same thing to me, only just found out on Friday they are going into liquidation!!! I can't believe they have scammed so many people. I'm even more gutted that I paid them direct and did not go through groupon due to me wanting a Saturday appointment and my Groupon voucher would have taken to long to activate, so gave them my Debit card details!
We won't get any money back from the company dealing with their liquidation either Ive been told by a friend dealing in bankrupsy (probably if anything 3p for every pound we have gave them)
Im gutted....so angry:mad:0 -
I have only just found out today that they've gone into liquidation, when I rang to chase up my brace. I was at the clinic on 6th March having more moulds taken and funnily enough they didn't mention anything. The insolvency company told me today the baliffs went in on 8th March. It's a total con, I was told by Gemma on reception that the £700 (usually £2,000) ended on October 31st, my appointment was on the 30th - so I panicked and paid up front!
Will the treatment completely cease does anyone know?0 -
If you had clearstep treatment not only has the dentist gone bust but clearstep have also gone bust.
Unless you paid on credit card or finance you are unlikely to get any money back.
Also because different orthodontic systems work in completely different ways any dentist who takes you on as a patient will have to start from scratch. as clearstep the lab have also gone bust your treatment cannot just carry on.
As I've said before the lab bills for these clear alligner systems can be tremendous so if was difficult to see their business model when what they charged barely covered lab costs.
If you want your braces finishing you will have go pay another dentist and they may need to use train track type braces to do it.0 -
ARGH!! Just found out about this after losing the will to live trying to get through on the 'phone!!!
Spoke to the credit card and because it was paid so long ago it needs to go through a legal challenge to get reinbursed. So frustrated!! Does anyone know where I can prove they are in liquidation? I cannot find anything on the Companies House website. I'd paid over £2k and not yet finished treatment
