Laptop charge problems

Options
Hi all.

Having issues with my 2 year old Toshiba L500 Satellite laptop. It is charging on an intermittent basis. It's fine when it does but other times it's just dead.

I've tried a different battery (from another machine) and checked the charger and they are fine. Wiggling the cable (near where it plugs to the laptop) sometimes gets the power charging again

It just now seems to pick and choose when to charge. It has had heavy use so I'm wondering if it's just giving up the ghost or something simple and relativley inexpensive to cure bar buying a new laptop

Thanks in advance

It sounds like either the power socket or the plug from the charger are on the way out. If you know someone who has a similar charger, you could try and see if its that.

If it's the socket, you'll either have to find someone who's happy to take the laptop apart and try and fit a new socket (it's doable but not always easy) or pay to have it repaired.

I had/have the same problem with my Toshiba laptop and even sent it back only for Toshiba to say 'no fault - check your charger'. The charger seemed to work but the end didn't sit tightly in the laptop socket so I carefully trimmed back a small amount of the plastic on the moulded charger end where it meets the metal outer pin which made it fit a lot more snugly and has been fine ever since.

The jack is becoming detached from the mobo, it's by far the most commons laptop fault. Any laptop repair shop can resolder it for you, the part costs a few pence. The problem is the time it takes to strip it down for access, which is why the price quoted can be anything from £60 to £100.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
