Having made an aborted attempt to visit New York I find myself with 2000+ dollars and the prospect of exchanging them back to sterling at a crap rate (1.84). I initially exchanged at 1.54 so I'm set to lose about £250!!
Does anyone know who is doing the best rate at the mo??

Advertise them for sale.
Maybe try Flyertalk.

If you can't sell it directly to another person, Ace FX ( http://www.ace-fx.com/ ) is currently buying at 1.617.
I've used their Canary Wharf branch a few times so can vouch for them being a legit company... if you can't get to London in person you can still send them the cash by special delivery and they will pay the Sterling amount into your bank account.
... and for your next trip consider using plastic instead of buying cash before travelling. It's cheaper (especially if you use one of the recommended cards) and you don't risk ending up with lots of currency left over.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
If you're planning to try again and can afford them, why not hang onto them. That may very well not be suitable but thought I suggest it.0
