Why can't companies just quote you a unit price?

With so many millions of people switching suppliers etc... And the confusion it can cause especially to some elderly people is it not time that suppliers had literally one or two tariffs and clearly stated unit price and standing charge (if any) for example

Supplier 1

Online tariff - electricity 4.0p per unit gas 4.0p per unit

Regular tariff - electricity 4.5p per unit gas 4.5p per unit

Supplier 2

Online tariff - electricity 4.2p per unit gas 4.2p per unit

Regular tariff - electricity 4.7p per unit gas 4.7p per unit.

This would help so many people see costs upfront, stop doorstep misselling as they wouldn't be able to confuse people with the old 'I can lower your monthly direct debit' for them only to be hit with a massive rise a fee months later etc...

I can understand why the suppliers wouldn't want this but the regulators should make then apply this logic. It would make comparisons so much easier for all involved.

When they 1st started knocking on the door saying we can save you money.

Thats the only question i asked. HOW much per unit..

You would have thought i asked them to solve Pi. Stuttered and stumbled
    and not a clue.

My gas usage is very low. One guy guaranteed to save me £80 a year. I asked so they will pay me to sign up with them. He looked puzzled.
I said i dont use £80 a year on gas so how can you save me £80?

To save £80 i would have had to use hundreds of £'s worth.
