Thunderbird problem

Options
I am trying to restore backed up, thunderbird emails, from one PC to another - the one that I am trying to restore to - has different emails on it......
My problem is that rather than overwrite the emails - I am trying to ensure that both PC's end up with the same on each - but when I try to restore them - they get overwritten
Sorry for the wording - but I cannot see anyway round this .....

  • How are you backing them up and restoring them ?

I presume you mean MozBackup then ? I don 't use that, nor familiar with it, and sadly at the moment I am out and about (well near the bar:beer:) I can talk you through a solution but not until I can get home to my Windows pcs . I take it you want each machine to have the same emails for the same email account on each machine ?

the best way to have achieved this was to use imap but then your mail provider may not have had that option. Someone may come along until I get home and give you some help , failing which I will be back....

Thanks - My email provider DOES offer IMAP but my mobile doesn't like so much data - hence, for the time being - I am sticking with POP3 - I may try IMAP now though...
Yes - I am trying to get the same (sent and received) emails on both PC's
Anyway - if I did use IMAP - That would only work for new messages - not months old ones
Yes - I am using mozbackup

I have used this before on XP.

Make sure Thunderbird is closed on both computers.

On first computer locate where in Thunderbird emails are stored - on XP usually C:\Documents and Settings\myname\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles

Copy all except msf files to a USB stick and rename them i.e. Old Trash etc.

Copy them from USB stick into the current profile on second computer.

Restart Thunderbird on the second computer and it will show Old Trash etc in the list of folders.

You can then copy the "Old" emails into your existing folders.

There is probably a quicker way but this has worked ok for me.

  • OK Twinkle On PC1 TB create a folder called PC1 in Local Folders and copy the mail you want to copy to PC2
    Close TB
On PC2 TB create a folder called PC2 in Local Folders and copy the mail you want to copy to PC1
    Close TB
On PC1 in windows explorer open %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles
Open xxxxxxx.default (xxxxx is the random string of the profile)
Open Mail\Local Folders copy these two files to a usb stick PC1.msf and PC1
Do the same on PC2 but copy the PC2.msf and PC2 files to the stick.
Whilst on PC2 copy the PC1 and PC1.msf files from the stick to PC2's Local Folders ...Start TB and you will have a folder in "Local Folders" called PC1 with its files , then copy the PC2 files to PC1's Local Folder .....start TB
There you have it....Bit if a FAFF but hey I didn't say it was elegant

  • Oh and if you are using POP3 on each PC what I would do is leave all the messages on the server (unless you want to delete Spam of course) Look in the account settings for your POP3 account in TB under Server
