Booster Jab for Cat

My local vet has written to tell me that it's time for my cat (18 months old) to have another booster jab. I rang up and was told that it was £29, does that sound right to you? Almost certain the first jab was £16.

My mother in law has an old cat and no longer has the booster jab given to it. I'm going to get it done this time but I just wondered how important it really is. In the letter the vet sent me I got the feeling they were trying to use some scare tactics to get me to make an appointment

Is your cat insured? Some insurance companies have it in their policies that cats must be up to date with their vaccinations

The older cat has had many vaccinations, probably far more than they need, and there is a sort of 'cumulative effect' on the immune system. Your kitten has not. You also need to be up to date with vaccinations for pet insurance and for using a cattery. Shop around - Vets4Pets do a lifetime of vaccinations for £100 or so, many places have offers at different times. No respectable vet gives or recommends unnecessary treatment, if you don't trust yours it's time for a change.

My vet has been ok with us not having booster injections after the age of 7. She had them yearly until then. He has seen evidence of unnecessary vaccinations causing more harm than good.

We also lost a cat to injection site cancer which was very traumatic for us all. :-(

But as a kitten and until the age if 7 we have always given all vaccinations and boosters.

    Thanks people
  • As Gettingready says, check the T&Cs of your insurance (if you have it) as some insist on boosters / yearly checkups and others would just excl problems that arose if they weren't done.

Also - does your cat go out? Personally, I feel a lot more strongly about boosters being done regularly for cats that do go out as they can catch feline leukemia easier from fighting.

    Cost here is £40

Our two have just had their annual booster. We have always used the same vet. It has never occurred to me to ring other vets to ask what they charge. I just (stupidly) assumed they all charged roughly the same. I now know that they dont! I was telling a friend that I had just paid £43.50 each. She said hers cost £25 each. Serves me right for making assumptions. I could have saved £47.
I know where I will be going in future.

I've just had 2 of mine done - ours cost just over £30 each, including leukaemia ;)
