How long for a refund

I switched energy company and the switch was completed 2weeks ago. I was in credit for both gas and electricity with my old company so they owe me a refund, how long should I expect to wait for my money back?

Have you submitted your opening/closing readings? It can take a month or more to get your final bill, depending on suplier.
You won't know if you are in credit or not until that bill is calculated.

4-6 weeks. I'm currently at about 5 weeks from switch date waiting for both Co-op and OVO. Very frustrating.

I know I am in credit with both, I'm sure if I had been in debit the bill would have been produced in a week ! OVO even took a DD after the changeover date which I thought very cheeky considering they operate on a pay in advance scheme. I never complained as I thought a refund would be imminent but another DD due in 2 days time !

edit : Sure enough OVO took another DD, will phone them later to complain and see if they have an idea when I will get my refund.

Once the switch has completed the new supplier has to advised the old supplier of the switching reading and for elec this involves several organisations. Once the readings had been provided the old supplier can calculate the final bill and then any refund due. The EU allows the old supplier 6 weeks to issue the final bill from the switching date (not date you applied to switch).

  • It's now been 6 weeks and I still haven't got a refund, where do I go from here?

    Phone them.

OVO - phoned them after six weeks, they said still waiting for readings from SP, but then they spoke to someone else and said they had the reading but it had not been put on system yet, held on the phone for a while whilst they updated account and produced final bill. Then waited3-5 working days to be refunded to bank account.

COOP - phoned them after six weeks, they saidstill waiting for readings from SP, I should have queried a little further at that stage but I opted to phone SP and asked themto send again. Week and a half later no news, so this time I emailed. But no reply after 3 working days, so phoned them and got it processed on the phone. Again 3-5 working days to be refunded to bank account. Received 16 days after OVO refund.

So they have had good use of my money £182 and £136.

Next time I will be -

    a) phoning after 2-3 weeks to see if they have final reading
    b) asking for a refund upfront leaving enough to cover final bill
  • Thanks, I'll be on the phone to them tomorrow.

They must all be the same. My daughter waited over a month after the final bill for SE to refund then contacted them. Their excuse was that they had tried to refund to the bank but the dd had been cancelled........... ?? Could they not have just sent a cheque to the address they sent the final bill to ?

Pay by DD get refund by DD, pay by cheque get refunded by cheque. Remember cheques are falling from use so they try not to use them.
