I've got about 15 months before my dad's 60th, but like you I have no idea (and probably a smaller budget, lol).

My dads' only real hobby is trains (full-sized and model) so I'm thinking along those lines - if I can club together with family, maybe a footplate day/learn to drive a train sort of thing - I know it's something he'd like to do. If trains aren't your dads' thing, then how about a driving experience, tickets to a footie match/concert etc.

Do you have children? Something I'm sure any grandpa would love would be something the grandkids have been involved with - framed handprints, pictures transferred onto a mug that he can use at work etc.

Another option would just be a really good party - I know in our family, getting more than direct family (parents/children) together is an act of military planning - happens once every 10 years on average - so it's generally a special occasion that does it. Maybe it would be a chance for him to catch up with family/friends he hasn't seen for a while.

You could do a 'This Is Your Life' style event - baby pictures on display, get friends and family to tell you stories of his life etc, and put it all together in an album.

  • It was my dads birthday in february, was really puzzled what to buy him so I done a dvd for him using windows movie maker.
Photos of my children and him,my brothers and sister + families hes irish so had irish music playing in background and photos over the top. He loved it cost nothing to make just my time.
It went down so well with both him and my mum that for mothers day I done one for her but more of a 'this is your life' her as a child/her parents/siblings/her children/up to present day with grandkids. put this to her mum and dads favourite music (they are no longer with us) and my mum loved it.

just a few ideas good luck xx

  • I got my Dad a copy of the local paper's front page from the date of his birth. You can also get copies of The Times etc. If that is too expensive for you, you could always make one up yourself by Googling for news items. Or how about making a nostalgia type box? Newspaper (or just copied news items), CD from his birthdate, old fashioned sweeties, old toys etc. You could also get hold of some old photo's of his and have a go at restoring them yourself by scanning and fiddling round with a paint programme.

    Good luck!

Are any of these books suitable?

I got my Dad the Sunderland Football book for his 60th. It contains reprints of newspaper reports of various memorable matches in Sunderland's history. Dad was thrilled to bits with it, and spent hours reading it.

My dad was 60 last year and I was so stuck I just typed in "dad 60 birthday" to ebay and quite a few nice things came up. We ended up buying him some silver cufflinks with a six pence piece in with the year of his birth on it (about £35.00) and a t-shirt saying "I'm not 60, I'm 51.06 + VAT!". He loved them both. Might be worth a look on ebay for inspiration???

    Hi,

My dad is 60 on the 23rd April. I bought him laptop related items (bag, wireless mouse & mat & USB drive) as thats what my mum has bought for him and I got a funny personalised card from Moonpig - (for 20% off use the code "smartsave" I paid £2.80 for the card including delivery.

My mum has gone him a bus pass holder as a joke as he can have a free one now! :) Although he has always driven.

If you have time you could scan in a selection of photos from when he was born to present day then create a slideshow to music. I did a few months ago for my parents and siblings, we laughed ourselves silly watching it and although it was VERY time comsuming (I even had slides converted and got other reletives to lend me photos to scan) but cost next to nothing for the blank CDs.

OMG that's what I got my Dad for his 60th, well combined with his xmas pressie as his birthday is 25th Dec!!

He was in his element doing it, absolutely LOVED it..................I personally didn't get it, but loved racing on ahead in the car and filming him going under bridges and beating him to stations!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Good to hear it was well received :)

Dad grew up with the GCR line running, literally, along the bottom of his garden, so you could say trains are in his blood - I'm sure he'll enjoy it :)

I had the same problem for my grandad's 80th we decided to get a picture done of his son, grandchildren and great grandchildren. As we knew someone who could take the picture and we brought the frame from the local shop so it was inexpensive and he liked it!!!
