Advice on dematting shorthairedcat (rescue)

Divadee, we do like you did if we get longhaired matted cats in- they usually end up looking very, very silly, but its so nice for them to be able to feel free to move and start cleaning themselves again.
As soon as cats come in to us (they always go straight to the vets for check up), if matted, the brilliant vet nurses always work their magic with combs/brushes/clippers etc, so I'm very lucky.
He looked very silly with a completely bald body and a fluffy head and tail. A bit like a lion lol. I think he was very embarrassed as well.
We only had him shaved twice. Once when we got him and once when we went on hols for 3 weeks and he got in a right old state for some reason. The 2nd time he refused to go out for weeks! It was as if he knew how silly he looked.0 -
Well I've taken out another handful of mats this evening - she has been very very good and sat still for most of it, though she did eventually get fed up and wriggle away!
The biggest one on her back has left a short patch but it can't be helped - I don't think it would ever have been possible to untangle and she will be much more comfortable without it. The rest don't really show. I also brushed the sofa where she's been sitting and got another couple of handfuls of fur - she's been shedding like mad!
Also made her vet appointment for her shots - I know she's frightened going in the car but that can't be helped either. I might try leaving the carrier out for her to investigate in case that helps. She is a nosy little thing and might explore it (when I tried this with big mog and even put treats in, he ate all the treats he could reach without actually going inside it and then ignored it completely :rotfl:)

Just to say that all her mats are out, her coat is now looking glossy (and I think will turn out very silky once it's all grown in) and she is much less of a scaredy little cat. She now sleeps on the bed with me and big mog, and is currently sitting under a kitchen chair mewping for attention. :j

she wont be 'pretty' - she will be gorgeous!!!!!!!!! yes those brown bits are where the fur is matted I think.
My last cat was like he was 'armour plated' when I er, aquired him.
it took patience and a variety of combs - and OHs razor when all else failed! and yes, helping get rid of mats seems to waken the desire to 'groom', my Nicki wouldnt groom at all until ALL the mats had been dealt with! then a good gentle brush and a comb once a week was all that was needed from me. and his fur wasnt 'shorthaired' but not longhaired either - sort of in between!0 -
i find grooming my cat really therapeutic. When I had quite bad depression it was he who (that ?) kept me sane.
He likes the furminator type brush but I have never been allowed to brush his tummy - my hands and arms are testament to the sharpness of his claws !0
