Best way to return expensive purchase to US?

I bought an expensive ring on eBay that's not as described. The seller has agreed to refund on return, so now I need to figure out how to return it to the US.
What would be the best way to mail jewellery, so I can insure for its full value (over £1k) and track its return to the seller?

You can't use Royal Mail as tracking is not guaranteed and you can't take risks with that value. I would use someone like Fedex or another carrier but you need to be sure that they will insure it. A lot of carriers exclude jewellery, second hand or antique items so double check that it is covered.
Have you paid customs charges on importing? I'm not sure if or how these could be reclaimed. It may be that the customs declaration on the return needs to be completed in a particular way in these circumstances.0
