Washing Machine Fault Or Fabric Softener?

Hello,
I have a brand new Hotpoint washing machine, only a month old, and I am concerned there is an issue with it already. The first couple of weeks were glorious - one of my favourite pleasures in life is wonderful smelling washing, but for some reason this isn't happening anymore. (Sad, I know :P)
I am using the same washing cycles, but different washing powder and different fabric softeners (Comfort at the moment). My washing comes out smelling of nothing. I tried doubling the amount of softener I put in - still nothing. I am currently on stand by opening up the drawer to make sure the softener is still there until the very end!
Washing stuff isn't always cheap - I don't want to unnecessarily be wasting money on it if its a fault with the machine. (Also, my sense of smell is perfectly fine and I am not used to any of the scents I am currently using!)
Help

Hi,
It is unlikely to be a fault with the washing machine, possible, but very unlikely.
Normally on the final rinse the two water valves of a double will open on modern machines causing the flows to cross and direct water into the softener compartment. Pretty much, if it empties, then it's working as it's such a simple, simple system.
That water then goes into the drum, there's nowhere else for it to go.
If there was an error, one of the valves was faulty or something then you'd expect to see an error code telling you something was wrong.
And, the washing machine isn't able to remove the smell or place any in there.

Try going back to whichever fabric softener you used first that you liked...although over time our noses do adjust to smell so it may be that you are not picking up the comfort smells...
Similar things happen with air fresheners, overtime the smell dissapears not because its any less but simply because its not a different smell anymore.frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Thanks for all your answers!
It's definitely not my nose getting used to it - I cant explain what was wrong but it seems to be fine again now :-/ oh well!0 -
I wish my washing came out smelling of nothing. I really don't like it when my washing stinks of fabric conditioner or detergent. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Do you use the website Pinterest? There are many home made washing detergent recipes on there that you can alter to suit your tastes. Very inexpensive and easy to do! I am sure you could probably just google it too. Otherwise you could use Ecover.0

Or not use fabric softenor at all. Haven't done for years now, saves fortune in FS, possibly reduces machine "gunk" and certainly helps reduce skin problems as FS just sits on fibres of clothes0
