IP address problem?

Options
Trying to be brief here, my dd's laptop worked fine as part of an internet network of 4 laptops and a desktop in her student flat. Someone had a problem and "did something to it" after which my daughters laptop wouldn't connect though the others all did. I tried various things in my limited way then decided she needed a new laptop. We got her a new Dell which connects to the net at home without any problem so we hoped it would pick up the connection in the flat too...no! It sees the network - and four others in her street- but displays a "limited connectivity" message and a searching for IP address box which doesn't seem to find one. What am I doing wrong and how do i sort it...in simplw terms please. They're on what was NTL broadband and have a belkin router.

many thanks.

Have you entered the encryption password or key?

Yeh if wireless remove any of the currently saved wireless network settings and reconnect it with the encryption key. (you should be able to look that up on the router-use someones computer that is already connected and in the browser goto 192.168.x.x - the x's depend on the router and the best way to find them is on the persons computer which is connected properly->goto the Connection status and then support and it is the default gateway)

If its plugged in with a wire (rj45) try a different wire.

Also make sure the laptop is set to get an ip address automatically, there isn't a static one set or anything which conflicts with some1 else's.

thanks for the help, I'll get DD to try this when she goes back but I suspect she's already tried entering the key...or maybe it was just the network password.
